Chapter 1 - The Glass Door

The cold bite of the aluminum frame pressed against Chloe's bare shoulder as Victoria shoved her toward the balcony. Victoria’s fingers remained dug into the soft flesh of Chloe’s arm, tight enough to bruise. A faint red mark already bloomed across Chloe’s left cheek, stinging from the sudden slap delivered just moments before. Inside the expansive, sterile living room, the late afternoon sun reflected harshly off the polished white marble floors.

"Your mother is gone. Now this is my house!" Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with a sharp, calculated fury. Her green silk blouse rustled violently as she tightened her grip.

Chloe tried to pull away, her long blonde hair tangling in the wind whipping off the terrace. "Let go of me! You have no right!"

"Get out of here! Get out! You don't belong here anymore!" Victoria shouted, pushing harder. The sliding glass door rattled on its tracks, open to the dizzying drop of the third-story balcony.

Tears streamed down Chloe’s face, hot and fast, soaking the collar of her peach button-up shirt. She raised a trembling hand to cradle her stinging arm, fighting to catch her breath. "This was my mother's home!" she sobbed, the words cracking in the empty, hollow space of the room.

A heavy footstep echoed from above. Chloe looked up to see her father, Richard, descending the curved white staircase. His dark suit was immaculate, the red silk tie hanging straight against his chest. His expression was stern, his jaw set in a hard line as he surveyed the scene.

"Victoria! What are you doing to my daughter?" Richard called out, his voice cutting through the tense air with commanding authority.

Chloe spun around, her eyes wide with desperate hope as her father walked closer. "Father... she was leaving," Chloe explained through ragged tears, pointing a shaking finger at the older woman.

Victoria instantly dropped her hand, smoothing the front of her beige trousers with chilling composure. A soft, sympathetic smile touched her lips, completely masking the malice that had twisted her features a second before. "Oh, Richard, she's having another episode," Victoria said, her voice dripping with practiced concern. "She tripped near the glass. I was only trying to catch her before she fell."

Chloe froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at her stepmother in utter disbelief.
