Chapter 12 - The Atlantic Call

"Chloe? Chloe, honey, are you there?" Aunt Sarah’s voice crackled through the old-fashioned earpiece, tight with breathless panic. "I just got an alert from my lawyer in the city saying the main estate deed was flagged for an emergency offshore transfer. What is happening down there? I’ve been trying to call your phone for hours, but it’s going straight to voicemail!"
Chloe closed her eyes, taking a deep, grounding breath as the ambient hum of the subterranean vault filled the background. "My phone was taken, Aunt Sarah. And Victoria... Victoria has been arrested by federal agents."
A sharp intake of breath echoed from the other end of the line. "Arrested? Oh, thank God. But the deed—if the transfer was already submitted to the city registry before her arrest, the syndicate might still have legal leverage over the property rights."
"Not according to the federal agent working the case," Chloe replied, glancing over at the man in the trench coat, who nodded reassuringly. "The transfer was executed under criminal duress and forgery. It’s legally void."
"Thank goodness," Sarah breathed out a shaky sigh of relief. "Your mother trusted that house with her life, Chloe. She knew Victoria was a threat the moment she wormed her way into Richard’s inner circle. That’s why she updated the primary trust documents six months before the... before the accident."
Chloe’s eyes snapped open. "Updated the trust? What do you mean? Mom told me the estate was split between me and Richard."
"She changed it after she discovered Richard’s mounting gambling debts," Sarah revealed, her voice dropping to a serious, confidential tone. "She knew Richard was vulnerable to blackmail. The primary trust stipulates that if any outside party attempts to coerce Richard into signing away the property, ownership instantly bypasses him entirely and transfers directly to you, with me as co-trustee until you turn twenty-one."
Chloe stared across the vault at her father, who was sitting quietly at the mahogany desk, listening to every word through the open air of the room. Richard bowed his head, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as he accepted the final consequence of his own mistakes.
"Aunt Sarah," Chloe said firmly, her voice carrying an authority she didn't know she possessed. "I need you to catch the first flight out of Boston tonight. Bring your legal team. We aren't just protecting the house anymore. We’re taking back the company."
"I’m already packed, sweetheart," Sarah replied instantly. "My car is pulling up to the private airstrip right now. I’ll be at the mansion by midnight."
Chloe clicked the receiver down, ending the call. She handed the heavy phone back to Mrs. Gable, who offered a warm, supportive smile and squeezed her shoulder.
"Well," the man in the trench coat said, picking up the silver flash drive from the desk and slipping it back into his coat pocket. "It looks like you have a busy night ahead of you, Ms. Vance. The federal grand jury convenes in Washington tomorrow morning at nine. I expect you and your father will both be there to testify."
"We'll be there," Chloe said, her voice unwavering.
The man nodded, turned on his heel, and walked out through the shattered masonry of the vault, disappearing into the dim shadows of the basement.
Silence settled over the underground room once more. Richard slowly stood up from the desk, walking toward Chloe with heavy, hesitant steps. He stopped a few feet away, looking at his daughter with a gaze full of profound remorse.
"I don't expect you to ever forgive me, Chloe," Richard said softly, his voice trembling. "I let a monster into our home. I traded your security for my own cowardice."
"You're right, I don't forgive you yet," Chloe replied, her tone cool and steady. "Not yet. But you can start earning it tomorrow morning."
She turned away from him, walking toward the heavy steel door of the vault to head back upstairs. As she reached the threshold, the old grandfather clock in the main hallway above chimed loudly, marking the arrival of ten o'clock.

Suddenly, the harsh, blaring sound of an emergency security klaxon cut through the night, echoing through every floor of the mansion. The overhead lights flickered twice and plunged the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
