Chapter 7 - The Master Override

The blinding glare of the security floodlights painted long, distorted shadows across the concrete floor. Through the high basement window, Chloe watched as Richard climbed into the driver’s seat of his sedan, his face pale and tense under the dashboard lights. Victoria stood right beside the open door, handing him a thick manila folder before leaning in to whisper something final into his ear.
"They're leaving," Chloe whispered, her voice tight with panic. "Where are they going?"
"The airport," Mrs. Gable said grimly, tracking their movements through the glass. "Victoria booked an emergency flight to Zurich this morning. She’s moving the corporate assets offshore before Sarah can file the injunction."
"Not if I open that vault," Chloe said, determination cutting through her fear. She scrambled to her feet and rushed over to the brick foundation wall where Victoria had hidden the lockbox earlier.
The metal panel was cool to the touch, set flush against the aged masonry. There was no keyhole, only a smooth glass biometric scanner the size of a postage stamp, glowing with a faint, pulsing blue light.
"How do I activate it?" Chloe asked, looking back at the housekeeper.
"Your mother designed the interface," Mrs. Gable replied, hurrying over to help. "It requires a physical blood sample to verify familial authority against the original trust documents. Press your thumb against the scanner."
Chloe didn't hesitate. She grabbed a small, rusted metal shard from a nearby tool tray and pricked the tip of her left thumb until a single bead of bright red blood welled up. With a steady hand, she pressed her thumb directly onto the glowing blue glass.
The scanner flickered. The blue light turned an intense, flashing amber. A series of mechanical whirs echoed from deep within the brickwork, followed by a harsh digital beep.
Access Denied. Secondary Verification Required.
"Denied?" Chloe’s voice broke. "Why did it deny me?"
"Because Victoria changed the secondary permissions yesterday when she accessed the main terminal upstairs," Mrs. Gable realized with a sinking heart. "She locked out your biological override using your father’s executive credentials."
"Is there any other way?" Chloe demanded, pressing her thumb against the glass a second time, praying the system would override the block.
Instead of opening, the biometric scanner flickered and went completely dark. A sharp, rhythmic alarm began to chirp from inside the wall, a low-pitched mechanical pulse that signaled a security lockout.
Upstairs, the heavy front door swung open with a resounding bang. Heavy, rapid footsteps marched across the white marble floors of the main hallway. Someone was coming down the basement stairs, and they weren't using the polite, slow pace of an executive.
"Hide!" Mrs. Gable hissed, shoving Chloe toward the shadows behind the water heater.
May you like
The basement door flew open, and standing at the top of the stairs, silhouetted by the hallway light, wasn't Victoria or Richard. It was a man in a dark trench coat, holding a heavy-duty industrial crowbar.
