Chapter 13 - Darkness in the Marble Hallway

The sudden plunge into total darkness left the basement in an eerie, suffocating shadow, illuminated only by the faint, pulsing amber glow of the damaged security terminal. Richard cursed softly under his breath, fumbling in his suit pockets for his lighter.

"Stay back," Richard muttered, stepping in front of Chloe as if he could still protect her from whatever threat lurked in the dark.

"The power didn't just fail," Chloe said, her heart hammering against her ribs as she listened intently to the sounds filtering down from the floors above. "The main breaker was tripped from the master panel."

"That requires a physical key to the utility closet upstairs," Mrs. Gable whispered, her hand gripping a heavy iron poker she had grabbed from the fireplace tools nearby. "No one else in the house has access except..."

She didn't need to finish the sentence. Victoria was locked in a federal holding cell twenty miles away, but the syndicate had operatives embedded deep within the local infrastructure.

A heavy creak echoed from the top of the basement stairs. Someone was walking down into the dark, moving with slow, calculated precision. No flashlights. No footsteps rushing in panic. Just the steady, rhythmic scrape of leather boots against the wooden steps.

Chloe held her breath, gripping the edge of the vault doorframe. Beside her, Richard reached out, his hand brushing against hers in the dark.

"Chloe," Richard whispered, his voice shaking with a desperate urgency. "If anything happens... take the flash drive from the desk. Run out through the old greenhouse to Sarah’s cottage. Don't look back."

"I'm not leaving you here," Chloe hissed back, her voice firm.

A shadowy figure materialized at the bottom of the stairs, standing just beneath the dim amber light of the broken terminal. The man wasn't wearing a trench coat this time. He wore a dark tactical uniform with no insignia, his face obscured by a reinforced ballistic mask. In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol, the barrel pointed directly toward the open vault door.

"Game's over, Mr. Vance," a synthesized, mechanical voice distorted through the mask’s audio filter echoed across the concrete floor. "Hand over the flash drive, and the girl walks away. Refuse, and there won't be enough left of this estate to rebuild."

Richard didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, grabbing a heavy metal wrench from the tool tray on the desk and charging directly toward the stairs in a desperate attempt to tackle the intruder.

"Richard, no!" Chloe screamed.

A sharp, muted thud echoed through the basement. Richard crumpled to the concrete floor halfway across the room, clutching his shoulder as a dark stain began to spread across the fabric of his dark suit.
