Chapter 5 - The Basement Trap

Chloe snatched her hand back as the oak door swung open, casting a long, bright strip of hallway light across the concrete floor. She dove behind a stack of heavy wooden storage crates, holding her breath and pulling her blonde hair back against her neck to remain entirely out of sight.
Footsteps descended the wooden stairs, slow and deliberate. The sharp click of high heels echoed off the basement walls. Victoria.
Chloe peeked through a narrow gap between two cardboard boxes. Victoria was carrying a heavy metal lockbox, the kind used for important legal documents and bearer bonds. She walked over to the old brick foundation wall in the darkest corner of the basement, right behind the unused coal chute.
With practiced ease, Victoria punched a combination into the numerical keypad set into the brickwork. A hidden compartment clicked open, revealing a dark recess behind the masonry. Victoria slid the lockbox inside, muttering to herself before closing the panel.
"Thought you could hide down here, did you?" a voice whispered directly into Chloe’s ear.
Chloe gasped, spinning around so fast she knocked over a stack of old magazines. Standing right behind her in the shadows was the house housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, holding a basket of folded laundry. The older woman’s face was carved with deep wrinkles, her eyes fixed on Chloe with an expression that wasn't angry, but deeply, painfully sad.
"Mrs. Gable," Chloe breathed, clutching her chest. "You have to help me. They’re stealing everything. My mother’s estate, the house—"
"Hush, child," Mrs. Gable interrupted, stepping closer and grabbing Chloe’s wrist with a grip that was surprisingly firm. The housekeeper didn't let go, but her thumb gently traced the red bruise Victoria had left on Chloe's cheek. "I’ve worked in this house for twenty years. I watched your mother build this empire. And I see what that woman is doing to your father."
"Then help me get to the study. The original paper deeds are in his desk. If I can get them, we can prove—"
"The deeds aren't in the study anymore, Chloe," Mrs. Gable whispered, her voice dropping to a low, urgent hum as Victoria’s footsteps grew closer from the other side of the basement. "Victoria moved them yesterday. She put them inside the wall safe right over there."
Chloe stared at the brick foundation wall where Victoria had just hidden the metal lockbox. "That’s where she put the box just now."
"No," Mrs. Gable said, shaking her head slowly, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization. "That isn't a lockbox for papers. That’s the control terminal for the old security vault. And your father doesn't even know it’s down here."
Before Chloe could ask what was inside the vault, Victoria’s voice rang out from the bottom of the stairs, sharp and clear.
"Mrs. Gable? Are you down there with the laundry? Richard is looking for you."
Mrs. Gable squeezed Chloe’s hand once, hard, and then stepped out from behind the crates into the open light of the basement. "Coming, ma'am! Just sorting the linens!" she called back, walking toward the stairs.
Chloe pressed herself flat against the cold concrete wall behind the crates, watching as Victoria walked further into the basement to check the perimeter, her eyes scanning the dark corners with predatory focus. Victoria stopped just three feet away from Chloe’s hiding spot, her gaze dropping to the floor.
There, lying right in the dust where Chloe had knocked them over, was a single, unmistakable silver earring—the exact pair Chloe’s mother had given her for her sixteenth birthday.

Victoria slowly bent down, her manicured fingers closing around the silver jewelry. She stood up, a slow, predatory smile spreading across her face as she turned her head directly toward the dark gap behind the storage crates.
