Chapter 6 - The Silver Proof

The silence in the basement stretched so tight it felt ready to snap. Victoria stood motionless in the dim orange glow of the water heater, holding the silver earring between her thumb and forefinger. She didn't call out. She didn't yell for Richard. Instead, she took two deliberate steps toward the storage crates, her eyes locked onto the narrow gap where Chloe was crouching.

"I know you're back there, little bird," Victoria whispered, her voice carrying a sickeningly sweet tone that sent a shiver straight down Chloe’s spine. "You really should learn that hiding only makes the fall much harder."

Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but the only exit led straight past Victoria toward the stairs. As Victoria’s hand reached out to shove the outermost crate aside, a sudden, sharp crash echoed from the upper floor.

"Victoria! Get up here now! The district attorney is on the phone!" Richard’s voice boomed down the stairwell, heavy with panic.

Victoria froze, her hand hovering inches from the wooden box. She glanced toward the stairs, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing her face. The phone call was clearly urgent, tied directly to the corporate merger she was trying to force through. She lowered her hand, clutching the silver earring tightly in her fist.

"This isn't over," Victoria muttered to the empty air. She turned on her heel and marched briskly toward the stairs, her high heels clacking against the wooden steps until the basement door slammed shut overhead.

Chloe let out a shaky breath she didn't realize she’d been holding. She slumped against the concrete wall, her legs trembling. A moment later, Mrs. Gable slipped quietly back around the corner of the laundry room, checking to ensure the coast was clear.

"She’s gone upstairs, but she knows you're down here," Mrs. Gable said urgently, kneeling beside Chloe. "You can't stay in this house another hour, Chloe. They’re planning to take you away tonight, not tomorrow."

"Where can I go?" Chloe asked, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "My phone is gone, my room is locked, and every exit is monitored."

"My cottage," Mrs. Gable replied without hesitation, pulling a heavy iron key from her apron pocket. "It’s at the edge of the estate, past the old glass greenhouse. Your mother gave me a life estate on that property years ago. Victoria has no jurisdiction there."

"What about the vault?" Chloe asked, pointing at the brick foundation wall. "What did you mean when you said it’s a control terminal?"

Mrs. Gable’s face darkened. She looked around the shadows as if even the walls had ears. "Your mother didn't just build a tech company, Chloe. Before she died, she discovered that Victoria’s previous husband didn't die of a natural heart attack like the police report claimed. She found financial records proving Victoria poisoned him for his insurance payout."

Chloe stared at the housekeeper, the blood draining from her face. "Poisoned him?"

"Yes. And your mother was preparing to hand those files over to the federal authorities the very week she... well, the week of her accident." Mrs. Gable’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper. "That brick wall down here isn't a safe. It’s the backup server for your mother’s private digital vault. The physical files are locked inside, but the master override requires a biometric key—your DNA, Chloe. You're the only living biological relative registered in the system."

Before Chloe could process the staggering weight of this revelation, a blinding beam of light cut through the basement darkness.

The security floodlights outside the basement window snapped on, illuminating the entire room. Through the small glass pane, Chloe saw the dark silhouette of Richard’s car backing out of the garage, and standing by the driver’s side door, holding a pair of heavy zip-ties, was Victoria.
