Chapter 10 - The Second Shot

The deafening crack of the gunshot echoed off the concrete walls, ringing in Chloe’s ears as the smell of cordite filled the damp basement air. A shower of white plaster rained down from the ceiling as the bullet buried itself harmlessly deep into the overhead timber beams.
"Richard, you absolute fool!" Victoria screamed, violently shaking off his grip and swinging the heavy barrel of the revolver around to point directly at his chest.
Richard stumbled backward, tripping over a discarded wooden crate and crashing hard onto the concrete floor. He clutched his arm, gasping for breath, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sheer terror as he looked up at the woman he had trusted with his home, his company, and his life.
"You... you were going to shoot me," Richard whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably.
"I was going to save our investment," Victoria snarled, her manicured finger still resting heavily on the trigger. She didn't look at Richard anymore; her gaze snapped back to the man in the trench coat, who stood calmly beside the open vault door.
"Hand over the drive," Victoria demanded, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "Right now, or the next bullet goes through your daughter’s head."
The man in the trench coat didn't move. He looked at Victoria with a cold, pitying smile. "You really still don't understand how this works, do you, Victoria? You were never the mastermind. You were just the cleanup crew."
Before Victoria could process the warning, a heavy set of footsteps thundered down the basement stairs. Before anyone could turn around, three armed figures in dark tactical vests swarmed into the room, their weapons raised and pointed directly at Victoria.
"Federal agents! Drop the weapon!" the lead agent shouted, his voice cutting through the tension with absolute authority.
Victoria froze. She looked at the federal agents, then down at the revolver in her hand, and finally toward the open vault door. Slowly, deliberately, she lowered the gun to her side, letting out a long, shuddering breath as if she were simply dropping a heavy burden at the end of a long day.
"You're too late," Victoria whispered, a dark, unsettling smile touching her lips. "The wire transfer was completed ten minutes ago. The house, the accounts, the corporate assets—they’re already under my name in the Cayman Islands."
The lead agent stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Victoria’s wrists with a sharp, metallic snap. "We didn't come here for the money accounts, Victoria. We came for the international extradition warrant regarding the murder of your first husband."
Victoria’s smug expression vanished in an instant, replaced by a mask of absolute horror as the agents hauled her toward the stairs.
As they led her past Richard, who was still sitting on the concrete floor, Victoria leaned down and whispered something so venomous into his ear that Richard flinched as if he had been struck. Then, she stopped, turning her head to look directly at Chloe one last time.
"You think you won, little girl?" Victoria laughed softly, a chilling sound that echoed off the damp walls. "Ask your father whose signature is actually on the final deed transfer filed this morning. It wasn't mine."
May you like
Chloe stared at her father in stunned silence as the basement door slammed shut behind the federal agents.
