Chapter 3 - The Missing Link

Panic flared hot and sharp in Chloe’s chest as she patted down her pockets a second time. Nothing. Her phone—the lifeline she used to text Aunt Sarah every single night—was missing. She vividly remembered sliding it into her back pocket before walking down to the kitchen for a glass of water, right before Victoria ambushed her near the staircase.

She scrambled to her feet, tearing through the quiet sanctuary of her bedroom. She threw open the drawers of her mahogany dresser, tossing clothes onto the floor. She lifted her mattress, checked beneath her desk, and even searched her bathroom, but the sleek black smartphone was completely gone.

It hadn't fallen out during the scuffle on the balcony; Victoria must have slipped it out of her pocket during the struggle, capitalizing on the chaos of the physical assault.

Without a phone, she was effectively trapped. The landline in the hallway was disconnected months ago under the guise of modernization. Her laptop required a biometric login that she suspected Victoria could bypass with her administrative credentials. Chloe walked over to her bedroom window, looking down at the paved driveway three stories below. No cars were parked outside except Richard’s black sedan.

A soft, metallic click sounded from the hallway.

Chloe froze, her breathing shallow. She crept toward her bedroom door, pressing her ear against the cool wood. Footsteps padded softly outside, pausing right outside her threshold. There was no knock, no warning. Just the faint, unmistakable sound of a key sliding into the old brass lock, followed by a double turn that bolted her inside from the outside.

"Victoria!" Chloe shouted, slamming her fists against the wood. "Open this door right now!"

"Quiet down, Chloe," Victoria’s voice filtered through the heavy panel, sounding entirely calm and collected. "Your father agrees that you need a digital detox. You’ve been obsessing over things that don't concern you. Dinner will be brought up at seven."

The footsteps retreated down the hall, fading into the ambient hum of the sprawling house.

Chloe rattled the doorknob, but it held firm, a solid barrier engineered to keep her locked away while they rewrote the narrative of her life. She paced the room, her mind racing. If she couldn't call for help, she had to find another way out. Her eyes darted to the large walk-in closet in the corner of her room, a space that backed up against the old architectural service shaft running from the attic down to the basement.

She pulled open the closet doors, pushing past her winter coats until she reached the back wall. Pounding on the plaster, she discovered what she had suspected: a hollow, thin access panel used for plumbing repairs when the mansion was renovated in the nineties.

Using a heavy metal hanger from the rack, she pried at the rusted screws securing the panel. With a sharp twist, the wood gave way, revealing a dark, narrow vertical shaft filled with old pipes and cobwebs. It was tight, dusty, and smelled of old insulation, but it offered a vertical pathway completely hidden from the rest of the house.

Chloe squeezed her shoulders through the opening, plunging her hands into the darkness, and began to crawl downward.
