Chapter 9 - The Empty Nest

The police cruisers tore up the gravel driveway of the Sterling estate, tires crunching sharply against the ground. The grand white-pillared mansion looked quiet and serene under the morning sun, with the floral swing still hanging brokenly in the greenhouse in the background. But as Detective Miller and his officers approached the double front doors, something felt eerily wrong.
The heavy oak doors stood slightly ajar, swinging gently in the morning breeze.
Julian rushed past the officers, pushing the door open all the way. "Clara?" he called out, his voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings of the grand foyer.
There was no answer. The house was dead silent. The expensive Persian rugs, the crystal chandeliers, and the antique furniture remained untouched, but all of Clara's personal belongings—her designer wardrobe, her vanity cases, and her private documents—had completely vanished from the master suite.
Martha walked in slowly, carrying Lily, who was now awake and clutching a small stuffed rabbit. She looked around the pristine living room, her instincts tingling with unease. "She knew the federal warrant was coming. She must have left during the night while we were trapped in the bank vault."
Detective Miller walked down the grand staircase, shaking his head. "The master safe is open and completely empty. She transferred all remaining corporate assets to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands at three o'clock this morning. She's gone, Julian."
Julian dropped his keys onto the entryway table, burying his face in his hands. "She took everything. The company, the estate, our entire livelihood... I'm a ruined man."
"You still have your daughter, Julian. That is worth more than all the money in the world," Martha said firmly, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Not quite," a calm, familiar voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone spun around. Arthur Vance stood in the entryway, no longer playing the role of the nervous defense attorney. He held a certified legal document in his hand, a smug smile stretching across his face.
"What do you want, Vance?" Detective Miller demanded, resting his hand on his holster.
"I am simply delivering a final legal notice on behalf of my client," Vance said smoothly, stepping into the foyer. "Before Clara transferred the offshore funds, she executed a foreclosure notice on this entire property due to unpaid corporate debt secured by Julian's personal guarantee. As of this morning, this house no longer belongs to the Sterling family."
