Chapter 1 - The Severed Rope

The heavy sound of tearing hemp echoed sharply inside the humid greenhouse. Clara stood above the scattered pink and white rose petals, breathing heavily in her long red dress. Two-year-old Lily sat stunned on the cold concrete, her beige tulle dress smudged with dirt. The floral swing hung uselessly from its cut ropes, swaying slightly in the draft coming through the glass panes.

"What on earth have you done, Clara?" Julian shouted, bursting through the greenhouse doors, his grey button-down shirt wrinkled from the drive. He stared in absolute disbelief at the fallen child and the cold woman standing over her.

Clara didn’t flinch. She smoothed the fabric of her sleeve with terrifying composure.

"I am simply redecorating, Julian," Clara replied, her voice dangerously calm as she looked down at the sobbing toddler. "Your former wife is gone, and this estate needs a complete transformation. That means removing every reminder of her sentimentality."

"She is a baby!" Julian yelled, stepping closer, his face flushing with rage. "You could have killed her! How can you be so vicious?"

"Vicious?" Clara laughed bitterly, stepping over the rose petals. "I am practical. You brought me into this house, and you promised me total control. You can either accept my methods, or you can explain to the police why your daughter suffered an unfortunate accident in my care."

Julian froze, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. The silence between them was thick with betrayal and unspoken blackmail.

"You are a monster," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with helpless fury.

"No, darling," Clara whispered back, leaning in close before walking past him toward the mansion. "I am your wife now."

Grandma Martha dropped her heavy grocery bag, the plastic tearing against the glass floor with a loud crunch. Oranges rolled across the concrete. Her eyes blazed with fury as she glared at Clara marching away, then rushed to scoop weeping Lily into her trembling arms.

"And you," Martha screamed at Julian, tears of rage in her eyes. "Get control of your wife!"

Julian looked away in shame, unable to meet Martha's piercing gaze, whispering, "I can't."
