Chapter 14 - Justice Descends

The sirens wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder as three unmarked federal vehicles and two state police cruisers tore through the open security gates of the airstrip, their red and blue lights flashing against the overcast afternoon sky.

Clara took a step backward toward the boarding stairs of the jet, her composure completely shattered. "This is insane! You have no proof!"

"The federal marshals have your biometric records matching the Boston cold case files," Mark Miller announced clearly, stepping forward as the police cruisers skidded to a halt around the aircraft. "It's over, Clara."

Arthur Vance backed away from Clara, holding his hands up defensively as two state troopers approached him. "I didn't know anything about Boston! I was just her legal counsel! She manipulated me too!"

"You helped her launder the money, Arthur—you're an accomplice," Detective Miller said, stepping out of the lead cruiser and snapping steel handcuffs onto the attorney's wrists with a sharp click.

Clara spun around to bolt up the aircraft stairs, but the flight captain wisely locked the cabin door from the inside, pulling the folding steps halfway up. Trapped on the tarmac, Clara turned back to face the approaching officers, her face contorted with pure venom.

"You think you've won?" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed a trembling finger directly at Julian. "He'll never get his company back! The offshore accounts are encrypted with multi-signature protocols that only I can authorize!"

"We'll worry about the accounts later," Julian said quietly, stepping forward with his head held high. He looked at Clara not with hatred, but with a profound, liberating sense of pity. "Right now, you're going to prison for the rest of your life."

Two female federal agents moved in swiftly, pressing Clara against the side of the tarmac police cruiser and locking steel bracelets around her wrists. She struggled violently, thrashing in her long red dress as they read her Miranda rights over the wailing sirens.

Martha watched quietly, holding little Lily tightly against her dark blue blouse. The toddler pointed a small finger toward the flashing lights, letting out a soft, curious coo.

"It's over now, sweetheart," Martha whispered into the toddler's hair, kissing her forehead as the cold wind began to clear, giving way to a sudden, brilliant ray of sunlight breaking through the clouds.
