Chapter 7 - Trapped in the Vault

The heavy steel door locked with a deep, hydraulic thud that reverberated through the concrete floor of the vault. A piercing alarm shrieked overhead, its red emergency strobe light flashing rhythmically against the cold metal safety deposit boxes.
"What happened?" Julian shouted over the din, frantically beating his palms against the thick vault door. "Thomas! Open the door!"
There was no response from the other side, only the muffled sound of heavy machinery powering down. Martha clutched Lily tighter as the toddler woke up with a start, letting out a frightened whimper.
"Hush now, sweetheart, Grandma's right here," Martha soothed, her voice remarkably steady despite the terrifying situation. She pulled out her phone, tapping the screen frantically. "There's no signal down here. Clara must have hacked the bank's master control panel."
Julian dropped to his knees, checking the electronic keypad beside the door. The control screen flickered, displaying a single line of digital text in glowing red letters: ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM LOCKED BY ADMINISTRATOR CLARA STERLING.
"She knew we were coming," Julian said, his voice dropping into a hollow whisper of defeat. "She must have tracked my car using the GPS system I installed last year. We walked right into another trap."
Martha knelt beside him, opening the metal box and pulling out the flash drive and the Vermont asylum file. "Desperation makes people sloppy, Julian. Clara is smart, but she's arrogant. She thinks locking us in here erases the evidence, but she forgot one crucial detail."
Julian looked up, confusion clouding his eyes. "What detail?"
"Sarah was smarter than both of us," Martha replied, holding up the small flash drive. "She encrypted these files and set them to auto-upload to the federal prosecutor's secure server the moment the vault box was opened. The data packet transferred thirty seconds before the system locked down."
Julian let out a sharp breath of disbelief mixed with cautious hope. "Are you certain?"
"Look at the blinking amber light on the console," Martha pointed toward the corner of the room where a small data port glowed steadily. "The transfer is already complete. The authorities have everything."
Suddenly, the flashing red alarm stopped, replaced by the sound of a mechanical hiss as pressurized air began to seep through the ventilation grates. The temperature in the vault began to drop rapidly.

"She's pumping liquid nitrogen into the room," Julian gasped, stumbling backward as a thin white fog rolled across the floor. "She's trying to freeze us out."
