Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

The chilling words hung heavily in the dimly lit hallway as Arthur Vance adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. Julian stepped back, shaking his head in absolute disbelief, while Martha gripped the doorway of the study for physical support.
"That's impossible," Julian said, his voice rising in panic. "Sarah never signed away her parental rights. I am her biological father and legal guardian."
Vance offered a cold, professional smile that didn't reach his eyes. He opened his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick document bound with a red ribbon, flipping smoothly to the final signature page.
"According to this notarized health proxy and guardianship contingency agreement, signed by Sarah Sterling just forty-eight hours before her cardiac arrest, you delegated all decision-making authority to Clara in the event of incapacitation," Vance explained calmly, sliding the paper toward Julian under the amber wall sconces.
Martha stormed out of the study, her eyes blazing with indignation. She marched right up to the attorney and slapped the document out of his hands, sending the papers fluttering to the hardwood floor.
"That signature is a complete fabrication!" Martha shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Sarah knew Clara was trying to ruin her! She would never sign her baby away to a cold-blooded vulture!"
Vance didn't flinch at the outburst. He bent down slowly, picked up the scattered papers, and squared them neatly against his briefcase. "You are more than welcome to contest the document in probate court, Madam. However, until a judge issues an injunction, Clara Sterling holds temporary legal custody of the toddler."
Clara emerged from the shadows of the staircase, draped in her long red dress, her expression as serene as a winter morning. She looked down at them with calculated pity.
"It's no use fighting, Martha," Clara said softly, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate steps. "The law is entirely on my side. Julian signed the corporate restructuring papers this afternoon, which means my name is now on the title deed of this estate as well."
Julian spun around to face Clara, his face pale with shock. "You said that paperwork was just a formality for the bank audit! You lied to me!"
"Business is business, darling," Clara replied coldly, stopping just inches from him. "You wanted financial salvation, and I provided it. Now, if you both could pack your belongings by morning, I would prefer to begin raising my stepdaughter in a peaceful, orderly environment."
Martha stepped protectively in front of the study door where little Lily was sleeping. "You will never touch that child."

"Try stopping me," Clara whispered, pulling a small silver key from her pocket and dangling it playfully. "The master security locks activate at midnight. Anyone without an authorized retinal scan will be locked out permanently."
