Chapter 12 - The Runway Confrontation

The cold wind whipped across the tarmac as Julian, Martha, and Mark sprinted past the chain-link security gate toward the private jet. The twin turbines roared with deafening intensity, sending exhaust waves rippling across the open field.
At the base of the boarding stairs, Clara stood dressed in her long red coat, her blonde hair blowing wildly in the wind. Arthur Vance stood beside her, handing a heavy leather briefcase to the waiting flight captain.
"Clara! Stop right there!" Julian shouted over the roar of the engines, bursting onto the tarmac.
Clara turned around slowly. Her expression didn't show panic; instead, a cold, mocking smile spread across her face. She looked at Julian as if he were a minor annoyance interrupting her morning schedule.
"Julian, darling, you really should learn to let go," Clara called out smoothly, her voice carrying easily over the wind. "You're ruining a perfectly good vacation."
Arthur Vance turned to the pilot, waving his hand impatiently. "Start the ascent. Ignore them."
"You're not going anywhere, Clara," Mark Miller shouted, flashing a federal badge as he pulled out a sidearm. "Federal Marshals! Step away from the aircraft or we will open fire."
The pilot hesitated, looking down at the armed investigator, and immediately powered down the turbine throttle. The deafening roar began to drop into a low, whining hum.
Clara narrowed her eyes, stepping down one stair to confront them directly. "You have no jurisdiction here, Marshal. The corporate titles are signed, the funds are legally transferred, and my marriage to Julian was entirely valid under state law."
"Your marriage was based on fraud and premeditated murder," Martha shouted, stepping forward with Lily still cradled securely in her arms. The toddler looked up with wide, innocent eyes at the sleek airplane and the strange adults.
Clara laughed, a cold, sharp sound that cut through the chilly air. "Prove it, old woman. Without an exhumation order signed by a federal judge, Sarah's body is safely cremated."
Julian froze. "Cremated?"
May you like
Clara smiled triumphantly. "That's right, darling. I had her remains cremated yesterday morning. There is no evidence left to test."
