Chapter 8 - The Rescue at Dawn

The morning sun broke over the city skyline, casting long golden rays across the polished glass facade of First National Bank. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second until three black-and-white police cruisers and an ambulance screeched to a halt in front of the main entrance.

Detective Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, adjusting his trench coat against the damp morning chill. He was met immediately by Arthur Vance, who stood on the sidewalk looking remarkably calm in his tailored charcoal suit, sipping a paper cup of coffee.

"Officer, thank goodness you're here," Vance said smoothly, stepping forward with an air of profound concern. "An unauthorized trespasser and a disgruntled former employee have broken into the bank's secure basement vault and triggered a hazardous material protocol. You need to intervene immediately."

Detective Miller narrowed his eyes, studying the attorney closely. "Mr. Vance, we received an automated federal data transmission from this exact vault thirty minutes ago detailing corporate fraud, extortion, and suspected homicide linked to Clara Sterling."

Vance’s calm demeanor flickered for a fraction of a second before he smoothly recovered his composure. "An automated transmission? Surely you don't take forged digital files seriously over legitimate corporate ownership titles."

Before Vance could continue, the heavy steel vault doors at the bottom of the bank stairs groaned open with a loud hydraulic hiss. Plume clouds of lingering nitrogen vapor rolled up the stairwell. Julian stumbled out first, coughing heavily and supporting an exhausted Martha, who cradled a sleeping Lily safely in her arms.

"Detective!" Julian called out hoarsely, blinking against the harsh daylight. "Clara Sterling is behind all of it. Arrest her before she flees the estate."

Detective Miller nodded firmly, motioning to two uniformed officers behind him. "Mr. Vance, step aside. We have a federal warrant to search the Sterling estate and bring Clara in for questioning regarding the suspicious death of Sarah Sterling."

Vance slowly lowered his coffee cup, realizing the trap had finally snapped shut on his client. He offered a tight, defeated smile. "I'll call her legal team."

Martha looked down at Lily, whispering a quiet prayer of gratitude as the fresh morning air filled her lungs. But as they climbed into the back of the police cruiser to head back to the mansion, a chilling thought struck her: Clara was never someone who went down quietly.
