Chapter 10 - The Last Stand

The eviction notice was ironclad, backed by complex corporate loopholes that Clara had meticulously woven over two years of marriage. By noon, the estate was officially declared bank-owned property, and a team of court-appointed bailiffs stood by the front gates waiting for the family to vacate.

Julian sat numbly on the wooden porch steps, staring out at the ruined floral swing in the greenhouse. Martha packed a single canvas duffel bag inside the nursery, folding Lily's beige dresses with quiet, deliberate care.

"We can't stay here, Julian," Martha said softly, stepping onto the porch with Lily on her hip. "We need to go to my old cottage by the lake. It's small, but it's safe, and Clara's reach doesn't extend out there."

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and defeated. "I failed Sarah, I failed my daughter, and I let a criminal strip away everything my grandfather built. How do I even look my child in the eye?"

"You look her in the eye by surviving, Julian," Martha replied, her voice steady and full of unwavering strength. "Sarah loved this family, and she didn't sacrifice her life so we could sit here and feel sorry for ourselves. We rebuild. From the ground up."

Before Julian could answer, the crunch of gravel signaled an incoming vehicle. A dusty black sedan pulled up the driveway, stopping right beside the police cruisers.

The driver's side door opened, and a rugged man in his late forties stepped out, wearing a faded plaid shirt and holding a worn leather binder. He walked briskly toward the porch, his eyes locked onto Martha.

"Are you Martha Hayes?" the man asked, his voice gravelly and urgent.

Martha stood up straight, shielding Lily slightly behind her. "Yes, I am. Who are you?"

"My name is Detective Jim Miller's brother, Mark Miller," the man said, pulling a folded photograph from his binder and handing it to Martha. "I'm a private investigator specializing in corporate fraud. I've been tracking Clara Sterling—or rather, Clara Vance—for over three years."

Julian stood up slowly, stepping closer. "Vance? Clara isn't her real last name?"

"No," Mark replied grimly, looking between Julian and Martha. "Clara is Arthur Vance's legal wife, not his sister or his associate. They've been running this exact long con across three different states for over a decade, marrying wealthy heirs, staging suspicious deaths, and liquidating estates."

Martha's breath caught in her throat as the terrifying puzzle pieces finally snapped together. "Then Sarah's death wasn't just a corporate takeover... it was part of a serial pattern."

"Exactly," Mark nodded, pulling another document from his binder. "And if we don't intercept them at the private airstrip forty miles north within the hour, Clara and Arthur will be boarding a private jet to Zurich with millions of dollars in stolen assets."
