Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

The heavy mahogany desk in the private study smelled faintly of old lavender and bitter almond oil—Sarah's favorite scent. Martha gently placed a sleeping Lily into a wicker bassinet in the corner, pulling a knitted blanket over the toddler's small shoulders. She turned back to the desk, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched the brass handles. Clara's parting words echoed relentlessly in her mind.
Julian hovered near the doorway, casting nervous glances down the dimly lit hallway. "Clara is just trying to manipulate you, Martha. Leave it alone. We don't need to dig up the past."
"The past is the only thing keeping that little girl alive," Martha replied sharply, pulling firmly on the center drawer. It was securely locked. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a heavy metal ring holding Sarah's old house keys. After trying three different keys, a satisfying click echoed through the quiet room.
The drawer slid open smoothly, revealing a stack of financial statements, a velvet jewelry box, and a thick leather-bound diary with a red ribbon bookmark. Martha set the financial papers aside and opened the diary to the final written page, dated just two days before Sarah's sudden passing.
"Read this, Julian," Martha demanded, holding the open page out toward him. "Look at what your precious business partner was doing behind your back."
Julian reluctantly stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the neat handwriting. Color drained rapidly from his face. Sarah's final entry detailed massive corporate transfers, forged signatures on asset protection trusts, and a chilling final sentence: Clara is poisoning my tea. If anything happens to me, look inside the safety deposit box at the downtown bank.
"This... this has to be a forgery," Julian stammered, though his voice lacked any genuine conviction. "Sarah was always anxious about the merger. She imagined things."
"She was murdered, Julian, and you handed her killer the keys to the kingdom," Martha whispered fiercely, gripping the edge of the desk. "And now Lily is the only thing standing between Clara and absolute control of the entire estate."
Before Julian could answer, a soft metallic click sounded from the front hallway. The heavy oak front door slowly creaked open, followed by the sound of expensive heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
"Who's there?" Julian called out, stepping into the hallway.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out of the shadows, holding a leather briefcase. It was Arthur Vance, Clara’s personal attorney, wearing a cold, knowing smirk.

"Good evening, Julian," Vance said smoothly, checking his gold watch. "I'm here to execute the emergency codicil to Sarah's will, transferring full guardianship of little Lily to Mrs. Clara Sterling, effective immediately."
