Chapter 8 - The Terminal Protocol

The high-pitched digital whine pierced the air, growing louder and more insistent with every passing second.
Victor Vance stopped dead in his tracks, his composure vanishing as he stared toward the dark recess of the crawlspace.
"What is that sound?" Maya demanded, covering her ears as the frequency vibrated through the damp concrete floor.
"It's the purge protocol," Sterling muttered, backing toward the stairs with uncharacteristic panic in his eyes. "The facility was programmed to incinerate all biological evidence if the primary seal was ever compromised."
Elena didn't hesitate. She shoved past Victor and lunged into the dark alcove behind the furnace, ignoring the choking smell of ozone and old dust.
"Elena, get back here!" Victor shouted, grabbing at her jacket, but missing as she disappeared into the narrow opening.
Inside the crawlspace, the blinking red light of a heavy steel terminal glowed furiously against the brick wall.
A digital countdown timer was ticking down from five minutes in stark, glowing green numbers: 04:59... 04:58...
Elena swept her federal ID card across the mechanical reader mounted next to the screen.
The system beeped harshly: ERROR: BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE REQUIRED.
Outside in the main basement, the tactical team scrambled toward the stairs, dragging the handcuffed sheriff and deputy behind them.
"Everyone out of the house!" Victor roared, grabbing Maya by the arm and pulling her toward the cellar steps.
"I'm not leaving my sister!" Maya cried out, fighting against Victor's grip as she stared into the dark crawlspace.
Elena’s fingers flew across the manual override keyboard, typing the passcode she had memorized from her mother's recovered journal.
The screen flashed yellow: ENTER SECONDARY ENCRYPTION KEY.
Elena turned her head toward the entrance of the crawlspace, shouting out to the chaos unfolding outside.
"Maya! What was the date of the first snow in ninety-nine?"
Maya stopped struggling against Victor, her eyes widening as she realized what her sister was asking for.
"November twelfth!" Maya screamed back over the blaring alarm.
Elena typed the digits into the terminal just as the countdown hit 02:15.
The screen flickered, went completely black, and then flashed a steady, calming blue.
SYSTEM DISARMED. WELCOME, AGENT BENNETT.

Silence rushed back into the basement, heavy and absolute, broken only by the sound of ragged breathing from the stairs.
