Chapter 5 - The Price Of Compliance

Arthur Sterling’s silhouette loomed large against the damp concrete wall as his flashlight swept across the gloomy basement.
Sheriff Thomas backed away, clearing a path for the director.
"You built this whole operation on lies, Arthur," Elena said, stepping out from the narrow crawlspace into the beam of Sterling’s light.
She stood tall, her hands relaxed at her sides, showing no sign of fear despite being outnumbered.
Sterling lowered his flashlight, his expression an unreadable mask of cold calculation.
"We built a stable economy in a dying town, Claire," Sterling said smoothly. "The pharmaceutical trials funded every school, road, and hospital within a fifty-mile radius. You think you're playing the hero, but you're about to bankrupt an entire community."
"At the expense of innocent lives," Elena countered, her voice steady and resolute.
Deputy Miller shifted nervously near the stairs, his hand twitching toward his radio.
"Where is she, Arthur?" Elena demanded, stepping closer to her superior. "Where is the girl who was locked in this room?"
Sterling let out a slow, heavy sigh, shaking his head with feigned disappointment.
"She was relocated years ago, Claire. Into the foster system. She doesn't even remember this place."
"That's a lie," a weak voice echoed from the shadowed corner behind the furnace.
Everyone froze.
Sheriff Thomas spun around, his weapon raised, while Sterling’s flashlight beam darted frantically into the dark alcove.
A young woman, no older than twenty-four, stepped hesitantly into the light, wearing an oversized flannel shirt and staring directly at Elena with haunted eyes.

"She never left," the young woman whispered, clutching the same silver locket Elena held in her hand. "They kept me down here the whole time."
