Chapter 1 - The Hood And The Badge

The cool morning air of the suburban cul-de-sac carried the faint scent of freshly cut grass, but the atmosphere on the asphalt was frigid.
Elena Vance stood with her palms pressed flat against the dusty hood of her sedan, the bright yellow rubber cleaning gloves she wore looking absurdly out of place against the dark paint.
Behind her, Deputy Miller shifted his weight, his heavy leather duty belt creaking in the silence.
"Hands on the hood. Now," Miller barked, his voice lacking any genuine authority, carrying instead a thin edge of nervous compliance.
Elena did not flinch. She kept her breathing slow and measured, her eyes fixed on the small scratch in the metal beneath her fingers.
Sheriff Thomas stood a few paces away, his stern expression masking a deep, festering panic.
"You already know," Elena said, her voice cutting through the quiet morning like a glass cutter.
"What did you find?" Thomas demanded, stepping closer.
"Nothing," Elena replied smoothly, turning her head just enough to meet his gaze. "We're taking her in."
"For what?" Miller interjected, his hand hovering near his holster. "You were never supposed to move into this house."
Thomas stared hard at the woman in the blue and white athletic t-shirt, his jaw tight.
"He thought hiding my federal credential would scare me," Elena continued, straightening up slowly, refusing to adopt a defensive posture. "But what he didn't know was I bought that house because of who was inside."
Miller reached into his back pocket, pulling out a worn black leather wallet. He flipped it open, revealing a federal agency ID card bearing the name Claire Bennett.
Sheriff Thomas stared intensely at the laminated card, his eyes narrowing as the reality of the situation settled into his bones.
He looked up, casting a suspicious, questioning expression at Elena.
"If you want to see his face when he realizes why I'm really there," Elena whispered directly into the open air, her eyes locking onto a hidden lens mounted on the gutter above, "tap the heart and check the first comment."
