Chapter 2 - Echoes From The Basement

The rusted latch of the basement door gave way with a metallic shriek that echoed off the damp concrete walls.

Elena descended the wooden stairs, her yellow cleaning gloves discarded on the kitchen counter above, leaving her bare hands free to brush away decades of undisturbed dust.

Sheriff Thomas remained at the top of the landing, his shadow stretching long and distorted down the staircase.

"You don't have a warrant for this specific sector of the foundation, Bennett," Thomas warned, though his voice lacked conviction.

"My federal jurisdiction supersedes local township ordinances when a classified witness is illegally detained within municipal limits," Elena replied without looking back.

Her fingers traced the edge of a brick wall that felt slightly cooler than the surrounding masonry.

Deputy Miller paced the floor upstairs, his heavy boots sounding like a muffled drumbeat against the hardwood.

"She isn't here, Elena," Thomas lied, his palms sweating against the wood of the doorframe. "The previous owner cleared out everything back in nineteen-ninety-eight."

"Then why does this mortar smell like fresh lime?" Elena asked softly.

She pressed her shoulder against a hollow-sounding section of the wall. With a sharp crack, the outer layer of faux brick gave way, revealing a narrow crawlspace that had been sealed off before the house was ever listed for sale.

A draft of stale air rushed out, carrying the unmistakable scent of old paper and dried lavender.

Elena pulled a tactical flashlight from her belt, clicking it on to sweep the beam across the dark interior.

Caught in the white circle of light sat a small wooden cot, a stack of water-damaged medical journals, and a child’s worn-out leather shoe.

Thomas stepped down onto the first stair, his face draining of all color.

"You should have stayed out of this county, Claire," Thomas whispered, his hand drifting toward his sidearm.

Elena slowly turned around, the beam of her flashlight illuminating the sudden terror in the sheriff's eyes.
