Chapter 4 - Shadows In The Kitchen

The heavy footsteps moved with deliberate precision across the kitchen floor, pausing just above the cellar entrance.

Elena held her breath in the darkness of the crawlspace, her fingers gripping the strap of her tactical holster.

Sheriff Thomas lowered his service weapon, letting it hang limply by his right thigh as he looked up toward the light.

"Director Vance," Thomas acknowledged, his voice strained. "I didn't expect you to handle a local extraction personally."

"When a federal operative goes rogue and reactivates a cold case involving federal grant money, I don't delegate," a sharp, commanding voice replied from the kitchen.

Elena recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to Arthur Sterling, her direct superior at the bureau, a man whose career was built on burying inconvenient truths.

Deputy Miller’s nervous stutter drifted down the stairs. "Director, we tried to contain her, but she forced her way into the foundation before we could secure the perimeter."

"Quiet, Miller," Sterling ordered coldly.

A shadow fell across the top of the basement stairs as heavy boots began to descend.

"Claire," Sterling called out, his tone dripping with false warmth. "I know you're down there. Come out before this escalates into something the agency can't sweep under the rug."

Elena remained motionless behind the false brick wall, her eyes fixed on the sliver of light filtering through the gap.

She reached into her pocket and clutched the small silver locket she had found beneath the cot—the same locket her mother wore the day she disappeared.

"You're protecting the people who funded this place, Sterling," Elena said, her voice carrying clearly out of the darkness.

The footsteps on the stairs stopped abruptly.

"You have no idea what you're meddling in, Claire," Sterling replied, stepping onto the basement floor. "That house isn't just a crime scene. It's an active federal containment zone."
