Chapter 3 - The Witness Who Never Was

The pages of the medical journal turned with a brittle rustle under Elena’s gloved fingertips.

The handwriting inside was frantic, scrawled in black ink that had faded to a deep rust color over the decades.

Thomas remained frozen on the stairs, his boots planted as if he were anchored to the wood by invisible weights.

"Dr. Aris Thorne," Elena read aloud, her voice echoing in the enclosed basement space. "Chief of Pediatrics at St. Jude Memorial. Declared dead in a boating accident off the coast of Maine, summer of ninety-nine."

"He made his choices," Thomas muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his upper lip. "The town needed funding. The state board looked the other way."

"By locking children in a residential basement to serve as anonymous donors for a private pharmaceutical trial?" Elena snapped, her composure finally cracking into sharp, righteous anger.

Upstairs, the front door creaked open.

Deputy Miller’s voice rang out through the floorboards, tense and hurried. "Sheriff, we've got a visitor coming up the driveway. A black sedan with state plates."

Elena extinguished her flashlight, plunging the crawlspace into near-total darkness save for the dim ambient light from the stairs.

"State police don't patrol this sector on Tuesdays," Elena said, her mind racing. "Who did you call, Thomas?"

"I didn't call anyone," the sheriff hissed, pulling his service weapon from its holster with a dry click of metal. "They must have tracked your federal transponder the moment you crossed the county line."

Elena slipped into the narrow crawlspace, pressing her back against the cool earth behind the false wall.

In the dim light, she noticed the small wooden cot was still warm.

Someone had been sitting on it less than an hour ago.

Footsteps echoed heavily in the kitchen above, accompanied by the cold, metallic chime of a badge hitting the counter.

"Sheriff Thomas," a deep, unfamiliar voice called out from the living room. "Drop your weapon and step away from the basement access."
