Chapter 11 - The Judge's Welcome

The quiet hum of the suburban morning seemed to die away entirely as Judge Robert Sterling stood calmly on his front porch, the afternoon sun glinting off his silver hair.
Elena kept her service weapon raised, her stance balanced and unyielding.
"Put the cup down, Judge," Elena ordered, her voice cutting through the silence of the cul-de-sac. "You're under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, and human rights violations."
Robert Sterling let out a gentle, grandfatherly chuckle, setting his teacup down on a small wicker table beside the door with a delicate clink.
"My dear girl, you have federal credentials, but you clearly lack political perspective," Robert said, walking slowly toward the edge of the porch. "Every signature on those foundational documents was approved by the oversight committee. Your own agency built the foundation under this entire neighborhood."
Victor Vance stepped forward, his face pale as he addressed the elder Sterling. "Robert, the containment protocol was decommissioned in ninety-nine. What you've been running here for the last decade is unauthorized treason."
"Unathorized?" Robert raised a single white eyebrow, his eyes flashing with sudden, calculated menace. "Who do you think authorized the funding for your pension fund, Victor? You think the Department of Justice operates on taxpayer dollars alone?"
Maya stepped out from behind Elena, her whole body shaking with a mixture of grief and fury.
"You watched me," Maya said, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled down her cheeks. "You watched me through a camera every single day for twenty years."
Robert's expression softened into an insulting mask of false pity. "You were a scientific asset, Maya. A very expensive, very necessary anomaly that needed constant observation."
Elena’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger of her service pistol.
"It ends today," Elena said, stepping off her lawn and crossing the strip of grass toward the neighbor's driveway.
Suddenly, the red blinking light in the second-floor window of Number 44 shifted, tracking her movement with mechanical precision.
From behind them, a sharp, metallic screech echoed down the street.
Two black armored vans rounded the corner of the cul-de-sac at high speed, their sirens dead silent, bearing no agency insignias.
Victor spun around, drawing his own weapon in alarm. "Those aren't our backup units."
May you like
Judge Robert Sterling smiled warmly, folding his hands neatly in front of his cardigan. "No, Claire. Those belong to the people who are about to clean up this neighborhood permanently."
