Chapter 6 - A Daughter's Reckoning

The silence in the basement became suffocating as the young woman stepped fully into the harsh glare of the flashlights.

Her skin was pale from decades spent away from natural sunlight, but her gaze was sharp and accusatory.

"Maya," Elena breathed, her voice trembling slightly as she recognized the exact features of her long-lost sister.

Sheriff Thomas lowered his gun completely, the weight of his guilt finally breaking his resolve.

"Don't look at me like that, kid," Thomas muttered, staring at the floorboards. "I brought you food every Tuesday."

"You locked the door every Wednesday," Maya replied, her voice devoid of emotion, cutting deeper than any threat.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, his professional veneer instantly returning as he assessed the catastrophic breach in his operation.

"Maya, let's not act rashly," Sterling said, his voice dropping into a smooth, persuasive register. "The people who funded your care are very powerful. If you walk out of this house with an active federal agent, you'll destroy everything your father worked for."

"My father was a monster, Arthur, and you were his business partner," Elena stepped between Sterling and her sister, shielding Maya with her body.

Deputy Miller finally panicked, pulling his radio off his shoulder and shouting into the receiver. "Dispatch, we have an unauthorized code red at the Vance property. Send immediate backup—"

Before Miller could finish his sentence, a loud crash echoed from the front yard above.

The sound of shattering glass tore through the quiet morning air, followed by the heavy thud of multiple boots storming through the front door.

Sterling’s eyes widened in sudden alarm. "That's not local backup."

Elena glanced up the stairs as a half-dozen tactical agents in unmarked black uniforms swarmed the kitchen, their assault rifles raised and pointed directly down the cellar stairs.

A tall man in a tailored grey suit pushed his way through the tactical team, stepping to the edge of the landing.

"Director Sterling," the man called out coldly. "Step away from the asset. Your commission has just been revoked."
