Chapter 7 - The Unmarked Suitors

The cold glare of the tactical helmet lights swept down the basement stairs, illuminating the tense group gathered in the damp cellar.
The man in the tailored grey suit—Victor Vance, no relation to Elena, but a senior oversight commissioner—adjusted his cuffs with calculated nonchalance.
"Secure the perimeter and detain the local officers," Victor ordered the armed tactical team.
Before Sheriff Thomas or Deputy Miller could react, zip-ties were locked tightly around their wrists, forcing them to their knees against the concrete wall.
Sterling didn't move. He stood his ground, his face hardening as he looked up at the man who had just dismantled his career.
"You have no authority here, Victor," Sterling hissed. "This is a classified state security matter."
"Not anymore, Arthur," Victor replied smoothly, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate steps. "The oversight committee reviewed the financial transfers from the nineteen-nineties this morning. Your little suburban experiment is officially over."
Elena kept her arm protectively around Maya, who was trembling slightly against her shoulder.
"Where were you twenty years ago, Victor?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing as she watched the commissioner approach. "You knew about the funding from the very beginning."
Victor paused, casting a brief, unreadable glance toward the young woman.
"I was trying to keep the agency from tearing itself apart from the inside out, Claire," Victor said quietly. "Some secrets are buried to protect the innocent."
"By sacrificing children?" Maya shouted, her voice echoing off the brickwork with sudden, raw fury.
Victor flinched slightly, the polished mask slipping for a fraction of a second.
"By containing a biological anomaly before it spread beyond this county," Victor corrected coldly.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights of an unmarked van parked outside began to flash through the basement windows, casting a crimson hue over the entire room.
A high-pitched digital alarm began to wail from deep within the crawlspace behind the furnace.

Sterling’s expression turned to sheer terror. "You fools... you didn't just open a door. You triggered the fail-safe."
