Chapter 9 - The Midnight Boardroom

The security intercom buzzed again, the metallic echo of the guard's voice hanging heavily in the grand dining room. Evelyn didn't blink; she maintained her absolute, unyielding posture while staring directly at her panicked nephew.
"Let them in," Evelyn commanded clearly into the intercom system. "Escort them straight to the main dining room."
Arthur hastily straightened his slate-gray suit jacket, attempting to regain a shred of his composure as the heavy iron doors swung open once more. Three senior board members—elderly, impeccably dressed men who had served under Evelyn’s father for decades—stepped into the room. Their faces were grim, etched with the unmistakable worry of individuals whose fortunes were suddenly hanging by a thread.
"Evelyn," Thomas Sterling, the eldest board director, began immediately, ignoring Arthur entirely as he walked toward the table. "We received encrypted emergency alerts regarding the federal asset freeze and Victor Sterling's arrest. Is it true? Has Vance Global been compromised?"
Evelyn stood up slowly from her chair, her black fitted dress catching the warm light of the crystal chandelier as she asserted absolute dominance over the room.
"Vance Global hasn't been compromised, Thomas—it has been thoroughly cleansed," Evelyn replied, her voice ringing out with absolute clarity. "Julian, Victor Sterling, and my own nephew Arthur have spent the last eighteen months systematically looting our subsidiary accounts to fund a hostile buyout."
Thomas turned his head sharply toward Arthur, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure fury. "Arthur? Is this true? You were trusted with the European expansion portfolio!"
Arthur stepped back, his hands raised defensively as he manufactured a look of wounded innocence. "It’s a complete fabrication! Aunt Evelyn is staging an internal coup to consolidate absolute power and silence anyone who questions her erratic decisions tonight!"
The other two board members exchanged nervous glances, murmuring among themselves as they weighed Evelyn’s decades of proven integrity against Arthur’s desperate accusations.
"If it’s a fabrication, Arthur, then you won't mind explaining why your Cayman Island investment firm received a wire transfer of forty million dollars from Julian’s offshore account twelve hours ago," Evelyn said smoothly, picking up Clara’s hard drive and placing it squarely in front of Thomas.
Thomas opened the sleek aluminum casing of the portable drive, plugged it into his own secure tablet, and tapped the screen twice. The encrypted ledger, complete with bank routing numbers, digital signatures, and Arthur’s verified personal identification code, illuminated the elder director's face in a harsh white glow.
The silence in the dining room became suffocating. Thomas looked up from his tablet, his expression hardening into stone as he stared directly at Arthur.
"Your father would have disowned you, Arthur," Thomas whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Security!"
Two private estate guards stepped into the room instantly, positioning themselves on either side of Arthur before he could reach the exit.
"You can't do this!" Arthur screamed as the guards grabbed his arms, dragging him backward toward the iron doors. "The board needs me! Without my approval, the Asian liquidity contracts default by morning!"
"The Asian contracts were restructured under my direct authorization ten minutes ago," Evelyn said coldly, watching her nephew get hauled out of the room.
The heavy doors closed with a dull thud, leaving Evelyn standing alone with the three stunned board members. Thomas slowly closed his tablet, bowed his head slightly in deep respect, and spoke with profound reverence.
"What are your orders, Madam Chairman?"
Evelyn looked down at the diamond engagement ring resting on the table, picked it up, and placed it back into her pocket.
"We open the markets on our own terms," she said.

Before anyone could speak, Evelyn's private mobile phone rang again, displaying a priority alert from an unknown satellite frequency that sent a sudden chill down her spine.
