Chapter 3 - The Accomplice’s Ultimatum

Clara froze mid-step, her hand hovering over the gilded doorkrab of the side hallway as Evelyn’s voice pierced the tense quiet of the dining room. The glittering silver sequins of her dress caught the dimming chandelier light, trembling slightly with the involuntary shudder of her frame.

Slowly, Clara turned around, forcing a brittle, defensive smile onto her face as she lifted her chin to meet Evelyn’s unwavering gaze.

"Evelyn, surely you don't think I had anything to do with Julian’s reckless financial maneuvers," Clara said, her voice pitched a fraction too high, betraying her deep-seated panic. "I was merely a design consultant for the new corporate headquarters. I don't know the first thing about offshore accounts or ledger entries."

Evelyn walked slowly down the empty length of the mahogany table, her heels making a measured, rhythmic sound against the hardwood floor. She stopped just a few feet away from Clara, towering over her with an intimidating mixture of poise and absolute authority.

"You spent the last six months dining at exclusive restaurants with Julian, charging luxury boutiques to corporate credit lines, and helping him launder personal expenses through phantom interior design contracts," Evelyn stated calmly, her voice entirely devoid of accusation yet heavy with undeniable fact.

Clara’s forced smile vanished completely, replaced by a pale, drawn expression. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out as Evelyn reached into her pocket and pulled out a manila envelope.

"I have the digital receipts, the flight manifests from your trips to Zurich together, and the signed lease for the penthouse apartment registered under your mother’s name," Evelyn continued, sliding the envelope out of its sleeve to reveal a stack of printed bank statements.

Panic flared in Clara’s eyes. The veneer of sophisticated confidence completely shattered, leaving behind a desperate young woman realizing she had backed the wrong horse in a very lethal corporate game.

"Julian promised me everything," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as tears finally welled up in her eyes, though she carefully avoided excessive crying to maintain her dignity. "He said you were frozen out of the company, that the divorce papers were already filed, and that Vance Global was heading straight for bankruptcy anyway."

"Julian lies to everyone, Clara, because he is fundamentally incapable of facing reality," Evelyn said, her tone softening just a fraction, though the intensity in her dark eyes remained entirely unaltered. "Which brings us to your current predicament. You can either hand over every piece of digital correspondence you have regarding Julian's hidden assets by midnight, or you can join him in a federal holding cell by morning."

Clara stared at the manila envelope, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she weighed the devastating options laid out before her. The glittering dress felt less like armor now and more like a neon sign pointing directly to her own complicity.

"If I give you everything," Clara whispered, her voice trembling, "what happens to me?"

"You walk out of this estate tonight with a single suitcase, board a red-eye flight out of the country, and never set foot in an American corporate office again," Evelyn replied coldly. "Choose wisely."

Clara swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she reached out with trembling fingers and accepted the terms of her exile.

"I'll send the hard drive to your private email before I reach the airport," Clara murmured, turning around and pushing open the side door to vanish into the darkness of the hallway.

Evelyn watched her leave, then turned back to the empty dining room, letting out a long, slow breath as the adrenaline finally began to recede from her veins.

Before she could sit down to review the remaining documents, her private mobile phone buzzed sharply on the mahogany table, displaying an unknown caller ID originating directly from the federal prosecutor's office.
