Chapter 2 - The Federal Intrusion

The heavy iron double doors echoed loudly against the oak walls as the two federal marshals stepped purposefully into the dining room. Their dark suits and official insignias instantly drained the remaining color from Julian Vance’s face.

Clara gasped softly behind Evelyn, her glittering silver sequin dress rustling as she took a panicked step backward toward the exit. The assembled guests began murmuring anxiously, shifting nervously in their velvet seats as the reality of the situation set in.

"Julian Vance?" the lead marshal asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion as he held out a crisp legal document. "You are named in a federal indictment for securities fraud, wire embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit corporate identity theft."

Julian backed away from the table, his blue suit jacket swinging open as his hands hovered uselessly in the air. His eyes darted desperately toward the tall French windows leading to the estate's sprawling gardens, calculating the impossible odds of an escape.

"This is a mistake—a corporate dispute blown entirely out of proportion!" Julian shouted defensively, his voice cracking as he looked frantically around the room for a friendly face among the terrified board members. "Evelyn, tell them this is an internal family matter! You can't let federal agents into our home!"

Evelyn remained entirely still at the head of the table, her hand resting gracefully on top of the diamond engagement ring and the incriminating financial charts. Her dark eyes tracked Julian’s frantic movements with chilling detachment, showing neither pity nor malicious triumph.

"It stopped being a family matter the moment you forged my signature on those offshore asset transfers three months ago," Evelyn replied evenly, her voice carrying easily across the silent room. "The federal investigators didn't arrive by accident, Julian. I handed them the file this morning."

The lead marshal stepped forward, closing the distance between them with practiced efficiency, and placed cold steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"You have the right to remain silent," the marshal began reciting, his deep voice washing over the stunned silence of the dining room.

Julian struggled briefly against the restraints, his face flushing a furious, ugly crimson as he was pulled toward the exit. He glared at Evelyn with unadulterated hatred, his teeth bared in a snarl of pure desperation.

"You think you’ve won, Evelyn?" Julian screamed, his voice breaking violently as the marshals hauled him toward the heavy doors. "Without my signature, the overseas liquidity freeze takes effect in forty-eight hours! You’ll lose the entire Asian portfolio, and the board will eat you alive by Monday morning!"

The heavy oak doors closed with a dull thud, cutting off Julian’s furious rant and leaving the dining room in a heavy, suffocating silence.

Clara stood frozen near the pillar, her hands trembling as she smoothed down the front of her shimmering dress, desperately trying to make herself invisible under Evelyn’s sweeping gaze.

Evelyn slowly lifted her hand from the table, picked up the diamond engagement ring, and slipped it effortlessly into the pocket of her black fitted dress. She turned to face the terrified board members who were still seated in paralyzed shock.

"The meeting is adjourned," Evelyn announced quietly. "Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, every department head will report to the main boardroom for emergency restructuring."

As the board members scrambled to gather their briefcases and exit the room in a panicked blur, Clara attempted to slip away unnoticed toward the side hallway.

"Not so fast, Clara," Evelyn’s voice rang out, stopping the younger woman dead in her tracks with a sudden, icy grip of dread.
