Chapter 8 - The Unwelcome Heir

The heavy iron doors echoed with a sharp, insistent knock that shattered the brief stillness of the dining room. Evelyn did not look up from her laptop immediately; she finished compiling the final data sequence for the morning board meeting, locked the terminal, and only then raised her head.

"Enter," she said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the large room.

The heavy doors creaked open, revealing a tall, impeccably dressed young man in a slate-gray Italian suit. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp, aquiline features bore an unmistakable resemblance to Julian, though his eyes carried a calculating coldness entirely devoid of his uncle’s recklessness.

"Aunt Evelyn," Arthur Vance greeted, stepping into the room with unearned confidence as he adjusted his platinum wristwatch. "I heard there was... an unexpected disruption at the estate tonight."

Evelyn leaned back in her chair, resting her hands lightly on the mahogany surface as she observed her nephew with cool detachment.

"Disruption, Arthur? Is that what we are calling federal indictments and multi-billion-dollar asset freezes now?" Evelyn asked, her tone dry and unyielding.

Arthur offered a smooth, practiced smile, walking uninvited toward the table and pulling out a chair opposite her without waiting for permission. He glanced down at the financial charts and the data drive Clara had left behind, his eyes lingering on the glittering documents for a fraction of a second too long.

"Julian was a fool who let his ambitions outpace his intellect," Arthur said smoothly, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. "He deserved everything that happened to him tonight. But Vance Global cannot afford a leadership vacuum while the Asian markets open in less than six hours."

Evelyn narrowed her eyes slightly, her dark gaze piercing through her nephew’s polished facade. "And I suppose you believe you are the natural successor to step into that vacuum."

"I am the only blood-relative left on the board with an unblemished executive record," Arthur replied, his voice carrying a subtle edge of entitlement. "If you hand over operational control to me tonight, I can quietly restructure the damaged portfolios, distance the company from Julian’s scandals, and ensure our family name remains untouched."

Evelyn let out a quiet, cold laugh that lacked any genuine humor, the sound echoing sharply against the wood-paneled walls.

"You spent the last two years running a shadow venture-capital firm out of the Cayman Islands, Arthur—funded largely by the very same shell companies Victor Sterling used to infiltrate our supply chain," Evelyn stated flatly, watching the color instantly drain from her nephew’s face.

Arthur’s polished smile vanished entirely, his posture stiffening as the reality of her omniscience crashed down upon him.

"You... you have no proof of that," Arthur stammered, his confident demeanor shattering into jagged pieces.

Evelyn reached across the table and tapped the surface of Clara’s digital hard drive with her fingernail.

"Clara downloaded your entire transaction history from Julian’s server before she left for the airstrip," Evelyn said quietly. "Your name is on every single unauthorized bridge loan that drained our European reserves."

Arthur stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back just as Julian had hours earlier, though his panic was far more refined and dangerous.

"If you ruin me, Aunt Evelyn, I’ll take the entire board down with me," Arthur hissed, leaning across the table with bared teeth. "You think you can run this empire alone? Without my network, the board will vote you out by noon tomorrow!"

Before Evelyn could answer, the security intercom on the wall buzzed loudly, and a security guard's voice broke through the speaker: Mrs. Vance, we have three members of the board arriving at the front gate unannounced.
