Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Gates

The live surveillance feed on Evelyn’s laptop flickered, illuminating her face in a harsh blue glow as the three unmarked black SUVs converged on Victor Sterling’s luxury vehicle near the estate gates.

Evelyn leaned closer to the screen, watching the digital feed with absolute focus. Victor’s car had been forced to a complete halt by the leading SUV, its hazard lights flashing rhythmically against the dense perimeter fog.

The driver’s side door of Victor’s car swung open, and Victor stepped out onto the gravel road, his tailored charcoal overcoat billowing slightly in the cold wind. He didn't look panicked; instead, he stood tall, gesturing angrily toward the men emerging from the unmarked vehicles.

"It seems your security detail has encountered some unexpected competition, Victor," Evelyn murmured softly to herself, watching the encrypted transmission stream in real-time.

On the screen, the men stepping out of the SUVs weren't Victor’s private bodyguards, nor were they local law enforcement. Their dark tactical gear bore the distinct, unnumbered insignia of federal asset recovery agents—a specialized division operating outside standard departmental jurisdiction.

Victor reached inside his overcoat, likely moving for a satellite communicator, but before his hand could clear the fabric, two federal agents swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back and forcing him hood-first against the hood of his luxury sedan.

"Federal Asset Recovery Unit," a booming voice echoed through the audio feed from the agents' body-mounted cameras. "Victor Sterling, you are under arrest for international money laundering, corporate espionage, and conspiracy against American infrastructure."

Victor struggled violently against the tactical restraints, his voice muffled against the metal hood of his car as he shouted furious threats that were entirely ignored by the agents.

Evelyn closed the laptop lid with a soft click, cutting off the audio feed as the heavy silence of the dining room returned. She walked back to the head of the table, picked up the diamond engagement ring, and held it up to the light. The diamond caught the crystal chandelier's brilliance, refracting clean, razor-sharp points of light across the polished mahogany.

The door behind her creaked open, and Clara stepped cautiously back into the room, her glittering silver sequin dress slightly smudged with dust from the side hallway.

"I saw the black SUVs on the perimeter monitor," Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she kept her distance from Evelyn. "Is it... is Victor taken care of?"

Evelyn didn't turn around immediately. She continued to examine the ring, turning it slowly between her fingers before sliding it back into her pocket.

"Victor thought he was playing a high-stakes game of chess, Clara, while treating everyone around him as disposable pawns," Evelyn said quietly, finally turning her head to fix her dark, intense gaze on the younger woman. "He forgot that the person who owns the board makes the rules."

Clara swallowed hard, clutching a digital hard drive tightly against her chest like a shield. "I... I finished downloading the encrypted files from Julian’s workstation. Every single transfer log, every hidden asset address in Zurich and Singapore—it’s all on this drive."

Evelyn walked slowly toward Clara, stopping just a foot away. She reached out, her fingers gently taking the hard drive from Clara’s trembling hands.

"You made the right choice tonight, Clara," Evelyn said evenly. "Your flight leaves out of private airstrip three at four o'clock. Do not miss it."

Clara nodded rapidly, tears of pure relief spilling over her eyelashes as she turned and hurried out of the room without looking back.

Evelyn walked back to the mahogany table, placed Clara’s hard drive beside the stack of financial charts, and sat down at the head of the table. Her phone buzzed again, displaying a text message from the federal prosecutor: Sterling’s network is fully locked. Asset seizure authorized.

Before Evelyn could reply, a sharp knock echoed from the heavy iron doors—a knock that didn't sound like law enforcement or corporate associates.
