Chapter 11 - The Midnight Convoy

The grand hallway of the estate was bathed in the harsh, flickering red glow of the security monitors as Evelyn strode purposefully toward the main exit. Thomas Sterling and the board members hurried to keep pace behind her, their aging legs struggling against her brisk, determined stride.
"Evelyn, look at the perimeter cameras," Thomas warned, pointing a trembling finger toward the high-definition monitor mounted near the marble foyer.
Evelyn stopped instantly, her dark eyes narrowing as she studied the live feed. Parked directly across the estate’s main security gates were four heavy, unmarked armored vans painted in flat matte black. No license plates, no municipal insignias, and no flashing emergency lights. A dozen armed individuals clad in heavy tactical gear and thermal balaclavas were unloading heavy metal-cutting equipment right outside the security booth.
"They aren't local law enforcement, and they aren't federal asset recovery," Evelyn observed quietly, her voice entirely devoid of fear, replaced instead by a cold, calculating fury. "That is Victor Sterling’s private extraction squad."
"Extraction?" one of the board members stammered, clutching his chest in sheer panic. "They’re here to break Julian out of federal custody before he can turn state's evidence, or worse—they’re coming here to eliminate anyone who knows about the Geneva quantum reserves!"
Evelyn didn't hesitate. She turned on her heel, marched back toward her private study, and unlocked a concealed biometric wall safe behind a heavy oil painting of her father. Inside sat a heavy, military-grade satellite communicator and a secure master override key for the estate's automated defense grid.
"Thomas, take the board members down through the subterranean service tunnels leading to the private airstrip," Evelyn ordered, handing Thomas a heavy brass master key. "Get on my private jet, take Clara’s hard drive, and do not land until you reach our secure legal counsel in London."
"And you, Evelyn?" Thomas protested, refusing to take the key. "We cannot leave you here alone to face an armed extraction team!"
"If I leave with you, they track our flight path and intercept us before we cross international airspace," Evelyn said firmly, pressing the key into the old man's trembling hand. "My presence here is the only thing keeping their attention focused on the house. Go. Now."
Without waiting for another argument, Thomas nodded grimly, herding the other two board members toward the concealed panel in the library wall. The heavy oak door slid shut silently behind them, plunging the hallway into shadow.
Evelyn walked back to the grand dining room, picked up the diamond engagement ring from the mahogany table, and slipped it onto her right ring finger. She adjusted the cuffs of her black fitted dress, took a slow, deep breath, and walked out through the open French windows directly into the cold night air of the estate gardens.
The crisp autumn wind whipped her dark hair around her face as she stepped onto the gravel path leading toward the front gates. The sound of heavy metal grinding against steel echoed through the silent night—the tactical squad was actively breaching the outer security perimeter.
Evelyn moved silently through the labyrinth of boxwood hedges, staying hidden within the deep shadows until she reached the security gatehouse.
Peering around the corner of the brick structure, she saw three of Victor’s tactical operatives attaching an explosive breaching charge to the main steel gate.
Evelyn pulled out her encrypted mobile phone, bypassed the standard lockout, and pressed the master detonation icon on her custom security application.
