Chapter 4 - The Midnight Call

The sharp vibration of the mobile phone cut through the quiet dining room like a knife, disturbing the stillness that had settled after Clara’s hurried exit. Evelyn walked back to the head of the table, her black fitted dress brushing against the edge of the mahogany as she picked up the device.

The screen glowed with an unknown caller ID marked with a federal secure routing code. Evelyn stared at it for a long, deliberate moment, letting the phone vibrate twice more before pressing accept and placing the device against her ear.

"Evelyn Vance," she answered, her voice steady and controlled.

"Mrs. Vance, this is Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance—no relation, I assure you," a deep, tired voice replied on the other end of the line. "We’ve just processed your husband at the federal holding facility downtown. He’s refusing to cooperate without an immediate bail hearing."

Evelyn pulled out her chair and sat down at the head of the table, resting her elbows on the polished wood while staring at the scattered financial charts.

"Julian will try every legal maneuver in the book to delay proceedings and liquidate whatever remaining liquid assets he hasn't already hidden," Evelyn said, her tone clinical and analytical. "You need to lock down every personal trust he controls before sunrise."

"That’s precisely why I’m calling you at this hour," Marcus replied, shuffling papers on his end of the line. "During the intake search, marshals recovered a physical key fob and a coded ledger from Julian's jacket pocket. The encryption on the digital ledger is military-grade, and our cybercrime unit estimates it will take at least forty-eight hours to crack."

Evelyn narrowed her eyes, her mind racing as she calculated the dangerous implications of a forty-eight-hour delay.

"Forty-eight hours is more than enough time for his co-conspirators on the international board to scrub their servers and drain the remaining capital from the Asian portfolio," Evelyn warned, her grip tightening around the edge of the table. "Julian has a silent partner in Singapore—someone who financed the initial hostile takeover attempt last year."

"And that is why I need your direct assistance, Mrs. Vance," the prosecutor said smoothly. "The ledger key fob requires biometric authorization or a direct master passphrase matching your late father’s encrypted core architecture. As the primary executor of the Vance estate, only you possess the override authority."

Evelyn stared down at the diamond engagement ring sitting in her palm, the light catching its facets and throwing sharp, crystalline reflections across the financial documents.

"Bring the ledger to my estate tonight," Evelyn ordered quietly. "Do not involve local law enforcement, and do not alert the board members. We handle this inside these walls before the sun comes up."

"Understood, Mrs. Vance. I’ll be at your gates in thirty minutes," the prosecutor replied before the line clicked dead.

Evelyn lowered the phone and placed it carefully on the table. The silence of the mansion felt heavier now, pregnant with the realization that Julian was merely a symptom of a much larger, more deeply rooted cancer eating away at the Vance empire.

She stood up, walking toward the tall French windows to look out over the manicured lawns bathed in pale moonlight. The estate security lights flickered once, then died entirely, plunging the perimeter gardens into sudden, absolute darkness.
