Chapter 9 - Caught In The Act

The executive penthouse was bathed in the harsh white glow of desk lamps and computer monitors. At the center of the sprawling mahogany desk, Richard Vance stood in his shirtsleeves, frantically feeding thick stacks of paper into a heavy-duty industrial shredder. The mechanical roar of the blades drowned out the sound of the elevator gate sliding open.
Clara stepped out of the freight cage first, her footsteps silent against the plush carpet. Helen and Martha followed closely behind, spreading out to block the primary exits.
“Working late, Uncle Richard?” Clara’s voice cut cleanly through the hum of the shredder.
Richard froze mid-motion. A single sheet of thick parchment remained clutched in his right hand, half-fed into the screaming teeth of the machine. He turned around slowly, his face slick with sweat, his usually immaculate gray hair disheveled. For a fraction of a second, panic flashed in his eyes before he smoothly slipped back into his familiar, avuncular mask.
“Clara, my dear,” Richard said, offering a tight, strained smile as he released the paper and stepped away from the shredder. “What are you doing here? This office is restricted.”
Clara walked forward, her eyes locked on his with an intensity that made him step back.
“Restricted from whom? The rightful owners?”
Richard’s smile faltered. He glanced past Clara and saw Helen stepping out from the shadows of the hallway, standing tall in her blue button-down shirt and beige cardigan. Richard’s breath hitched.
“Helen,” he muttered, the color draining entirely from his face. “You… you’re supposed to be in Europe.”
“I was never going to stay away while you continued to live off my daughter’s stolen inheritance,” Helen replied, her voice steady and lethal.
Richard’s eyes darted toward the exit, calculating his odds. He let out a harsh, bitter laugh, leaning back against the edge of the mahogany desk.
“You think you’ve won something, don’t you?” Richard mocked, spreading his arms wide. “Even if you have the ledgers, the statute of limitations on the corporate restructuring expired a decade ago. Legally, every single asset belongs to me. You can’t touch me.”
Clara stopped just inches from him, her gaze unflinching. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen, playing back a crystal-clear audio recording of Richard’s voice whispering frantic instructions to an offshore account manager just ten minutes prior.
The audio echoed off the glass walls of the penthouse, detailing the exact routing number of the embezzled funds.
Richard stared at the phone, his face contorting into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage.

“You little fool,” Richard snarled, lunging forward to grab the device from Clara’s hand.
