Chapter 4 - The Secret Study

The interior of the house was cool and smelled faintly of lavender and old paper. Clara followed Helen through the expansive living room, her bare feet clicking softly against the hardwood floor. Martha trailed close behind, nervously adjusting her patterned blouse and casting anxious glances toward the hallway. The golden layered necklaces around Clara’s neck rose and fell rapidly with every harsh breath she took.

Helen didn’t stop until she reached the heavy oak door of Clara’s private study—a room Richard had explicitly forbidden anyone else to enter, claiming it contained sensitive business archives.

“He keeps the wall safe behind the portrait of your grandfather,” Helen noted, her voice echoing slightly in the quiet corridor.

Clara stopped in her tracks, her hand hovering in the air.

“How do you know about the wall safe? Even I wasn’t allowed to touch that painting.”

Helen turned, her gray eyes piercing through the dim light of the hallway.

“Because I helped your father design it thirty years ago, before Richard systematically dismantled everything they built.”

Clara stared at the older woman, a cold realization dawning in the pit of her stomach. The details were too specific, the conviction too absolute to be a random fabrication. With trembling fingers, Clara reached out and grasped the heavy gold frame of her grandfather’s portrait, swinging the canvas away from the wall to reveal a heavy steel dial safe recessed into the plaster.

“It has a digital keypad,” Clara said, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know the combination.”

Helen stepped forward, pulling the small brass key from her cardigan pocket. She pointed to a tiny, well-hidden keyhole tucked beneath the digital pad.

“Richard always relied on modern technology, forgetting that mechanical overrides never fail,” Helen said calmly. She inserted the brass key and turned it with a satisfying, heavy click.

Martha gasped, leaning in closer as the heavy steel door of the safe swung open automatically, releasing thirty years of pent-up air. Clara stepped forward, peering into the dark recess of the safe, her heart pounding against her ribs as she reached out her pale hand to touch the contents hidden inside.
