Chapter 1 - The Ash And The Ember

The smoke from the custom fire pit drifted across the manicured stone patio, carrying the distinct scent of scorching calfskin and melting gold hardware. Thirty-year-old Clara stood frozen, her white sleeveless top stark against the dimming twilight, her fingers still wrapped tightly around the stem of her half-empty champagne glass. Her dark hair fell loosely over one pale shoulder, catching the amber glow of the flames. Across the patio, sixty-year-old Helen—dressed in her sensible blue button-down shirt and beige cardigan—stared into the fire with an unbothered, chillingly blank expression. The pink luxury handbag, a limited-edition piece that had cost more than most cars, hissed as the synthetic lining met the roaring embers. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. Just moments ago, Helen had ruined Clara’s thirty-fifth birthday cake by smashing the two-tier yellow confection onto the outdoor table, silencing the gathering of wealthy friends and family. Now, Helen had incinerated Clara’s prized possession without a single word of genuine explanation, leaving fifty-year-old Martha, draped in a patterned blouse, standing nearby with her mouth still frozen in a wide gasp of utter disbelief.

Clara’s voice cut through the snapping wood, sharp and trembling with sudden rage.

“What on earth is wrong with you, Helen? Have you completely lost your mind?”

Helen turned her head slowly, her gray hair catching the firelight. Her voice came out as a soft, mocking whisper that chilled the warm evening air.

“Oops.”

Clara stepped forward, her champagne glass tilting dangerously.

“Don’t you dare play games with me. That bag was a gift from my grandmother. You know exactly what it meant to me!”

Helen didn’t blink. She reached into her beige cardigan pocket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key, holding it up where the flames could illuminate it.

“Your grandmother didn’t buy you that bag, Clara. And the person who actually paid for it isn’t who you think it is.”

Martha rushed over from the edge of the patio, grabbing Helen’s arm in sheer panic.

“Helen, stop! You shouldn’t have said that. It’s too soon!”

Clara yanked her gaze between the two older women, her heart pounding against her ribs.

“What are you talking about? What do you know about my family?”

Helen pulled her arm away gently, her cold eyes locking onto Clara’s terrified face.

“Everything, my dear. And tonight, the truth burns.”
