Chapter 3 - Shadows In The Ledger

The silence that followed Helen’s accusation was heavier than the smoke rising from the fire pit. Clara stood paralyzed, the pale skin of her face draining of what little color it had left. Around them, the remaining party guests had retreated toward the edges of the terrace, whispering urgently among themselves, casting nervous glances at the young woman in the white sleeveless top and her strange, confrontational elders.

“That’s an absurd lie,” Clara whispered, her voice shaking as she tried to piece her reality back together. “My uncle Richard is a respected philanthropist. He took me in when I had nothing. He gave me a home.”

Martha stepped closer, placing a hesitant hand on Clara’s bare shoulder. Clara flinched away from the touch.

“Clara, listen to me,” Martha said softly, her eyes swimming with a mixture of pity and dread. “Richard has always been very good at playing the hero. But a hero doesn’t hide financial records inside a dead woman’s vanity.”

Clara turned on Martha, the anger finally breaking through her shock.

“You’ve known him? You’re in on this too? Who are you people? You show up to my thirty-fifth birthday party, ruin my cake, burn my bag, and now you’re spitting vile lies about my family?”

Helen walked past the burning embers, heading toward the French doors that led into Clara’s immaculate living room. She paused with her hand on the brass handle, looking back over her shoulder.

“We aren’t enemies, Clara. We’re the only real family you have left. The people who raised you built their empire on the bones of your parents' company.”

Clara slammed her champagne glass down onto a nearby patio table, the crystal shattering against the stone and spraying sparkling liquid across the surface.

“Prove it!” Clara screamed, her voice finally breaking the restraint she had held all evening. “Show me one shred of evidence!”

Helen pushed the French doors open, stepping into the dimly lit interior of the house.

“Follow me inside, then,” Helen said without turning around. “And bring the key.”
