Chapter 6 - The Alleyway Confrontation

The damp chill of the brick-walled alleyway seeped directly into Elena’s bones as the man in the charcoal-gray suit shoved her deeper into the shadows. The roar of the city traffic faded into a muffled hum, replaced by the terrifying sound of her own ragged breathing. The hard metal barrel of what felt like a suppressed firearm pressed firmly against her ribs, a chilling reminder of how fragile her existence truly was.
"I’ll ask you one last time," the operative growled, his voice dangerously low. "Where is the drive?"
Elena’s mind raced at a thousand miles per hour. If she surrendered the flash drive, she would likely be eliminated to tie up loose ends; Vance Enterprises clearly operated outside the bounds of the law to protect their corporate empire. If she didn't surrender it, she had mere seconds to live. Her trembling fingers brushed against the pocket of her worn grey denim jacket, sliding over the cool casing of the encrypted device.
"I... I threw it away," Elena lied, forcing as much conviction into her voice as her terrified lungs could manage. "In the public trash can two blocks back! Go check it yourself!"
The man narrowed his eyes, studying her face for any sign of deceit. He applied more pressure with the weapon, making Elena gasp in sharp pain.
"You're a terrible liar," the man hissed. "People like you don't throw away things that look expensive. You hoard them."
Suddenly, a loud clatter echoed from the mouth of the alleyway. A stray cat knocked over an aluminum soda can, shattering the tense silence. For a split second, the operative's gaze flicked toward the noise. That fraction of a second was all Elena needed. Remembering the heavy metal bowl tucked inside her canvas bag, she swung the bag with all her might, smashing the dented tin directly into the man’s knee.
A muffled curse escaped his lips as his leg buckled under the unexpected impact. The weapon slipped from his grip, clattering loudly against the wet concrete. Elena didn't hesitate; she sprinted past him, her worn sneakers slapping frantically against the pavement as she burst out of the alley and into the crowded pedestrian thoroughfare.

Chest heaving, she wove desperately through the sea of commuters, glancing frantically over her shoulder. The man was right behind her, limping heavily but closing the distance with terrifying speed. Desperate for cover, Elena spotted the revolving glass doors of a bustling municipal transit station and threw herself inside, disappearing into the underground maze of subway platforms just as the train doors hissed shut behind her.
