Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Vance

Vance stepped out from the blinding glare of the tactical flashlight, his immaculate charcoal-gray suit completely unblemished by the filth of the underground cistern. He moved with a predatory, calculated grace, holding a heavy-caliber firearm with casual familiarity. Behind him, two armed operatives flanked the exit, blocking any hope of escape. Vance didn't even look at Julianna; his cold, calculating eyes were locked entirely on Elena and the flashing red LED of the flash drive in her hand.
"You've been a persistent thorn in my side, Ms...." Vance trailed off, offering a cruel, condescending smile. "Actually, I don't even know your name. And honestly, by the time the morning paper hits the stands, it won't matter anyway."
Julianna scrambled backward off the metal desk, positioning herself protectively in front of an empty utility hatch, her voice shaking with rage.
"Vance, leave her out of this!" Julianna screamed, pointing a trembling finger at her husband. "She's just a bystander! This is between you and me!"
"You betrayed our family, Julianna," Vance replied smoothly, never breaking eye contact with Elena. "You tried to leak the water rights acquisition files to federal investigators. You used our own flesh and blood—our toddler son—as a courier to pass that coin to a stranger. Do you have any idea how much money, how much political capital, you nearly destroyed?"
Elena slowly slid her hand deeper into her pocket, her fingers curling tightly around the casing of the flash drive. Her mind raced, calculating every possible angle. There was no tactical advantage here; they were outgunned, trapped underground, and completely at the mercy of a corrupt corporate titan.
"The entire city is going to know what you did, Vance," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute despite the sheer terror gripping her heart. "The data is already backed up on external secure servers. Killing us won't stop the truth from coming out tomorrow morning."
Vance chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the damp brick walls.
"My dear, desperate friend," Vance said, taking another slow step forward, raising the barrel of his weapon. "In the corporate world, truth is merely a commodity bought and paid for by the highest bidder. And right now, I’m about to make a very large withdrawal."

Before Vance could pull the trigger, a sudden, deafening mechanical roar shook the cistern ceiling, sending a shower of loose gravel and dust raining down upon them all.
