Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets

"What did you say, Vance?" Julianna whispered into the phone, her voice dropping to a panicked, breathless tremor that she desperately tried to conceal from the surrounding crowd.

"You heard me," the cold voice snapped back over the speaker. "The 1912 Sovereign Medillion isn't just a collectible; it holds the cryptographic key code to the offshore trust fund. Without it, our corporate sponsors will pull out of the merger by sunrise. Where are you?"

Julianna’s eyes darted frantically between the phone, her innocent-looking toddler who was now happily chewing on a plastic toy, and Elena, who stood frozen with her hands still gripping the edges of her worn grey denim jacket.

"I'm... I'm on 4th Street," Julianna stammered, her aristocratic composure completely shattering under the weight of impending financial ruin. "And... and we have a situation regarding the boy."

"Bring him home immediately, and whatever you do, don't draw any attention," Vance ordered, before the line abruptly went dead with a harsh click.

Julianna slowly lowered the phone, her chest heaving as she glared at Elena with renewed hostility. She reached into her designer handbag once more, pulling out a thick wad of crisp hundred-dollar bills wrapped in a rubber band. Without a word, she thrust the money aggressively toward Elena’s chest.

"Take this," Julianna demanded in a harsh whisper. "Take it and forget you ever saw my son. Forget you ever saw that coin. If you breathe a word of this to anyone—investigators, reporters, or the police—you will regret the day you were born."

Elena stared down at the cash, the temptation of immediate survival warring with a sudden, suffocating sense of injustice. She slowly raised her eyes to meet Julianna's desperate, venomous gaze.

"You think money fixes everything, don't you?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm, refusing to reach for the bribe. "You care more about your corporate merger and your vault than you do about why your own toddler is wandering the streets stealing your secrets."

Julianna flinched as if struck across the face, her grip tightening on her son's arm until the boy let out a sharp whimper.

"You know nothing about my life, you parasite," Julianna spat, turning sharply on her heel to storm away.

As Julianna dragged the laughing toddler toward a waiting black luxury sedan at the curb, Elena noticed something drop from the bottom of the designer handbag onto the pavement—a small, encrypted flash drive that blinked with a faint red LED light.
