Chapter 5 - The Blinking Red Light

The heavy tires of the black luxury sedan crunched softly against the asphalt as the vehicle peeled away from the curb, merging into the dense afternoon traffic and leaving behind a cloud of exhaust fumes. The sidewalk suddenly felt vast and unnervingly quiet. Pedestrians resumed their hurried paces, their eyes glued to smartphones, completely oblivious to the explosive drama that had just unfolded. Only Elena remained rooted to the concrete, her gaze locked onto a small, dark object resting near the gutter.
Slowly, Elena crouched down on aching knees. Her fingers brushed against the cool metal casing of the item Julianna had dropped. It was a compact, encrypted flash drive, its tiny LED light pulsing with a rhythmic, hypnotic red glow. A faint embossed logo of Vance Enterprises was etched into the side of the plastic housing. Elena picked it up, feeling the strange, heavy significance of the device throbbing in her palm like a mechanical heartbeat.
"What are you hiding in here?" Elena murmured to herself, sliding the flash drive deep into the pocket of her worn grey denim jacket.
She knew she should walk away. She knew standard survival for someone in her position meant keeping her head down, staying invisible, and avoiding the dangerous orbits of the ultra-wealthy. Yet, as she stood back up and looked at her dented metal bowl, a bitter wave of resentment washed over her. People like Julianna and Vance stepped over homeless souls every single day, treating human lives as disposable collateral while guarding their stolen fortunes behind reinforced steel vaults.
Elena gathered her meager belongings, folding her cardboard sign and sliding the metal bowl into her ragged canvas bag. She needed to find a public computer, somewhere away from the cameras of downtown. But as she turned the corner toward the municipal library, a heavy hand firmly grabbed her arm from behind.
"Excuse me, ma'am," a deep, gravelly voice muttered. "You dropped something."
Elena spun around, her heart leaping into her throat as she found herself face-to-face with a towering man in a sharp, charcoal-gray suit who was definitely not a librarian. He stared down at her with dead, unblinking eyes, his hand clamped tightly around her forearm like a steel vice.
"I didn't drop anything," Elena said, trying to pull away while panic surged through her veins.
The man smiled, but his eyes remained ice-cold as he pressed a heavy object firmly against her ribs.

"Mr. Vance sends his regards," the man whispered menacingly. "Hand over the flash drive, or this alley becomes your permanent address."
