Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal of Privilege

The mother’s chest heaved violently as she yanked her son away from Elena, her manicured nails digging unnecessarily deep into the toddler’s pristine white onesie.
"Don't you dare lie on my child!" the woman screamed, her voice cutting through the midday traffic like a jagged blade. "He doesn't even know what money is! You manipulated a baby to steal from my family while I turned my back for two seconds in the boutique!"
Elena scrambled to her feet, her worn grey denim jacket slipping slightly off her thin shoulders.
"I didn't manipulate anyone!" Elena shot back, stepping forward despite the glaring onlookers forming a dense circle around them. "Your son walked up to me on his own two feet, dropped that rare collector's coin right into my bowl, and proudly admitted he took it from you!"
The mother’s face drained of color, her eyes darting nervously toward the glittering windows of the luxury jewelry store fifty yards up the avenue.
"Shut your filthy mouth!" the woman hissed, taking a sudden step back as if Elena carried a contagious disease. "You’re a homeless vagrant trying to extort a wealthy mother! I’ve half a mind to call the police right now and have you thrown in a cage where you belong!"
"Go ahead, call them!" Elena challenged, her voice rising, fueled by weeks of suppressed desperation and unfair humiliation. "Let the police look at the security cameras! Let them ask your kid who gave him the coin!"
Before the mother could formulate a retort, a sharp, metallic ringtone sliced through the heated exchange. The wealthy woman frantically dug into her designer handbag, pulling out a sleek gold-encased smartphone. Her eyes widened in sheer horror as she glanced at the screen caller ID. She pressed the button with a trembling thumb, lifting the phone to her ear.
"Vance? Listen to me, I found him, the boy is—"
"Shut up, Julianna," a cold, baritone voice interrupted from the speaker, loud enough for Elena to hear. "The vault audit just finished. The primary inheritance medallion is missing. If the board finds out before the merger closes tomorrow, we lose everything."

Julianna froze, the color draining entirely from her face as she slowly turned her gaze back toward Elena’s dented metal bowl.
