Chapter 12 - The Underground Collapse

The ground beneath their feet violently shuddered as a deafening metallic screech echoed through the cavernous cistern. Chunks of ancient brick and mortar rained down from the arched ceiling, plunging the underground chamber into a chaotic cloud of choking dust and falling debris. Vance stumbled backward, his tactical flashlight beam wildly sweeping across the collapsing walls as his operatives cursed in panic, momentarily distracted from their targets.
"What is happening?!" Julianna screamed over the roar, covering her head with her arms as a massive iron pipe snapped overhead, sending gallons of pressurized water hissing into the chamber.
Elena didn't hesitate. Seizing the momentary chaos, she lunged sideways, tackling Julianna behind the rusted metal maintenance desk just as a volley of blind gunfire from Vance’s operatives shattered the concrete wall inches above their heads. The flash drive slipped from Elena's grasp, clattering across the wet floor and sliding directly toward the roaring torrent of water pouring from the broken pipe.
"The drive!" Elena yelled, watching the blinking red LED light tumble toward the drainage grate.
With reckless abandon, Elena lunged forward, sliding across the slick concrete and diving headfirst into the rushing water. Her fingers grazed the smooth plastic casing of the flash drive just as the suction of the drainage pipe threatened to pull it down into the dark abyss. She snatched it tightly to her chest, rolling onto her back as the freezing water surged around her.
Across the cistern, Vance was desperately trying to maintain his footing as a section of the brick wall caved in, revealing a massive, automated municipal maintenance vehicle idling in a parallel storm tunnel—a city repair crew breaking through from the main line.
"Get them! Don't let them reach the street crew!" Vance bellowed, coughing violently through the dense clouds of dust.
One of the operatives charged forward, raising his weapon, but before he could fire, Julianna grabbed a heavy iron wrench from the maintenance desk and hurled it with all her might, catching the operative squarely in the chest and sending him crashing backward into the rushing water.

"Move, Elena! Now!" Julianna shouted, grabbing Elena’s arm and pulling her toward the gaping breach in the wall where the municipal crew was currently cutting through the concrete with heavy industrial torches.
