Chapter 2 - The Mother’s Desperate Clutches

The screech of designer heels on pavement startled pedestrians within a ten-foot radius. A woman in an expensive emerald blazer, her styled hair disheveled and face flushed with absolute panic, shoved herself between Elena and the toddler. Her manicured fingers clawed frantically past Elena’s worn grey denim jacket, diving straight into the dented metal bowl. With a sharp gasp of relief, she snatched the silver collector's coin from the bottom of the tin, clutching it tightly to her chest as if checking for a pulse. Her chest heaved beneath the silk blouse, and she glared down at Elena with a mixture of aristocratic contempt and raw, visceral terror.

"You vile creature," the woman hissed, her voice trembling with adrenaline. "Don't you dare touch my son's belongings. If you pawned that, you would have destroyed everything!"

Elena pulled backward, pressing her spine hard against the gritty brick wall, her palms flat against the cold concrete. She held up her hands defensively, shaking her head as the crowd began to slow their pace, rubbernecking at the scene unfolding on the sidewalk. The toddler stood completely unbothered, tugging playfully at the hem of his mother’s expensive blazer while offering a wide, toothy grin that entirely contradicted the gravity of the accusation.

"I didn't steal anything," Elena answered, her voice steady despite the trembling in her knees. "He dropped it right into my bowl. Ask him yourself."
