Chapter 10 - The Confession in the Dark

Julianna’s chest heaved as she stared at Elena, her aristocratic composure completely eradicated by the damp, suffocating darkness of the underground cistern. She wiped at her tear-stained cheeks with the back of a trembling, manicured hand, looking less like an untouchable corporate elite and more like a cornered animal.

"How... how did you find this place?" Julianna stammered, her voice echoing off the moss-covered brick walls. "Vance said nobody knew about the old maintenance tunnels."

"Your son found something even more important," Elena replied, stepping closer while keeping a wary eye on the shadows behind the cistern. She pulled the encrypted flash drive out of her pocket, letting the faint red LED pulse between them. "He didn't just wander off in a boutique, did he, Julianna? You brought him there to hide this drive in a public place. But he had other plans. He gave it to the homeless woman on the sidewalk instead."

Julianna flinched as if she had been physically struck. She slumped back against the metal desk, burying her face in her hands.

"I had to get it out of the house," Julianna whispered, her voice cracking with profound despair. "Vance is a monster. Everything we own, everything our family built—it’s built on blood, extortion, and stolen land. When I found out about Project Redemption, about how many families they were planning to evict and throw onto the streets... I tried to copy the files. I tried to whistleblow."

Elena stopped dead in her tracks. The hostility she had felt earlier began to dissolve, replaced by a complex, heavy realization.

"And the coin?" Elena asked quietly. "The 1912 Sovereign Medillion?"

"It’s the master cryptographic decryption key," Julianna sobbed, looking up with red, swollen eyes. "Without it, the encrypted data on that drive is just gibberish. Vance can still lock me away in a psychiatric ward, declare me unstable, and take full custody of my son. He’s already sent his men after me, hasn't he?"

"One of them chased me through the municipal library," Elena answered grimly. "And he's probably tracking this signal right now."

Before Julianna could respond, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the tunnel entrance behind them. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, sweeping across the damp brick walls and blinding them both.

"Well, well, well," a smooth, chilling voice rang out from the light. "Family reunion in the sewers. How poetic."
