Chapter 9

Monday morning arrived with a lingering sense of domestic tranquility that felt entirely foreign to Eleanor’s routine. Her weekend with Julian had extended seamlessly into Sunday afternoon, spent walking through the botanical gardens and sharing coffee in a quiet neighborhood café. Yet, as she logged into her computer terminal at work, the harsh realities of corporate life quickly reasserted themselves.

An urgent email notification popped up in her inbox, flagged with high priority. It was a formal memo from the executive compliance committee, forwarded by Margaret, addressing an unexpected audit request initiated by one of the firm's primary external investors—none other than the venture capital firm associated with Victoria Vance.

Eleanor frowned, reading through the dense legal phrasing. The audit specifically targeted recent marketing department expenditures and project approvals, digging back into the exact timeframe when Chloe had been employed. While Eleanor’s own record was spotless, the timing of the audit felt far too convenient to be an innocent coincidence. Victoria was clearly attempting to leverage her connections to cause administrative friction for Julian.

Within ten minutes of reading the email, Eleanor’s office phone rang. It was Julian’s direct extension.

"Eleanor. Did you receive the memo?" Julian’s voice was calm, but there was an underlying edge of steel that indicated he was taking the matter very seriously.

"I just finished reading it," Eleanor replied, standing up to close her office door for privacy. "The timing is remarkably suspect. Is this Victoria's doing?"

"Indirectly, yes," Julian confirmed. "Her current associate is attempting to weaponize an external compliance review to create bureaucratic bottlenecks for my division. It’s a transparent attempt to pressure me into backing down on a pending corporate restructuring vote scheduled for next month. They think they can create enough noise to distract us."

"What can I do?" Eleanor asked without a moment's hesitation, her protective instincts kicking in. "My department handled several of those campaign accounts. If they are looking for irregularities, they won't find any in my work, but I can help pull the complete archives to expedite the review."

"I don't want you dragged into corporate warfare, Eleanor," Julian said, his tone softening with concern. "That is precisely why I brought you out of that environment in the first place."

"I am not a fragile vase that needs to be locked away in a display case, Julian," Eleanor countered firmly, her voice steady. "Someone tried to ruin my reputation in this building, and now someone is trying to undermine yours using my past department as leverage. We face this together, or we don't face it at all."

There was a brief pause on the line. Then, Julian let out a soft, appreciative sigh. "You never cease to amaze me. Meet me in my office in twenty minutes. We’ll draft a response that will shut down their audit before it even clears the preliminary review board."
