Chapter 7

The following Friday night, the rain pattered softly against the glass windows of L’Étoile, the very same upscale restaurant where their unconventional story had begun. This time, however, there were no hidden agendas, no watching spectators, and no cruel pranks waiting in the wings. Julian had reserved a secluded corner table draped in crisp white linen, softly illuminated by a pair of flickering candles that mirrored the ones from a week prior.
Eleanor wore a deep emerald green silk dress that caught the amber light, her blonde hair styled in loose, flowing waves rather than the tight updo of that fateful night. When Julian stood up as she approached the table, wearing a charcoal suit with an open-collared shirt, his breath visibly caught for a brief moment. He looked at her with an intensity that made the surrounding room dissolve into absolute insignificance.
"You look breathtaking," Julian whispered, pulling out her chair with deliberate care.
"Thank you," Eleanor replied, smoothing her dress as she sat down. "I have to admit, walking back through these doors felt a little surreal. My heart did a brief double-take when I saw the host stand."
"We are here to reclaim the narrative," Julian said smoothly, taking his seat across from her and immediately reaching out to wrap his warm hands around hers. "From this moment forward, this restaurant is simply a place where two people who enjoy each other's company decided to share an exceptionally good meal."
The contrast between this evening and their first meeting was profound. As the waiter poured a crisp, vintage white wine, they began to unpack the deeper layers of their lives. Julian shared stories of his upbringing, growing up in a family that valued duty and ambition above all else, which explained his initial cynicism regarding the corporate social ladder. In return, Eleanor spoke candidly about her passions, her dreams of leading creative projects, and the quiet resilience she had cultivated growing up as the youngest of three siblings in a bustling household.
Conversation flowed effortlessly, punctuated by easy laughter and quiet moments of shared understanding. There was no need to fill every silence with nervous chatter; their comfort in each other's presence felt entirely organic, as if they had known one another for years rather than days.
Midway through the appetizer course, Julian paused, swirling his wine glass thoughtfully. "I need to tell you something about my past, Eleanor. Not because it defines who I am today, but because I want complete transparency between us."

Eleanor looked at him, sensing the slight shift in his posture. "You don't have to share anything you're not comfortable with, Julian."
"I want to," he insisted quietly. "Three years ago, I was engaged. It was a relationship built on social expectations rather than genuine connection. When I realized she was only interested in my position and the lifestyle that came with it, I called off the wedding two weeks before the ceremony. It created a significant scandal in certain corporate circles, and ever since, I built an emotional wall around myself. I stopped looking for anything real. Until last Friday night."
