Chapter 1

The flickering candlelight cast long, dancing shadows across the pristine white tablecloth of L’Étoile, an upscale restaurant renowned for its exorbitant prices and elite clientele. Eleanor sat motionless in her pink dress with ruffled sleeves, her blonde hair pinned up in a delicate, elegant style that now felt entirely out of place. Across from her sat a plate of untouched gourmet sea bass and two crystal wine glasses catching the amber glow of the room. Julian stood beside her, a tall, imposing figure in a sharp navy blue suit jacket and a crisp, white open-collar shirt. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his brow furrowed with deep, genuine concern as he looked down at her tear-streaked face.
Eleanor swallowed hard, the lump in her throat making it nearly impossible to form words. She took a ragged, trembling breath, desperately trying to steady her racing heart. Her eyes flicked toward the entrance of the dining room where her supposed friends, the masterminds behind this elaborate, cruel prank, were likely watching from a safe distance, waiting for her public humiliation to peak. She forced herself to look back up at Julian, meeting his steady, compassionate gaze. With a soft, trembling voice that barely carried over the ambient murmur of the restaurant, she whispered, "Surprise. She's your date."
Julian did not flinch, nor did his expression harden with annoyance or confusion. Instead, a quiet resolve settled into his features. He slowly placed his warm, reassuring hand on her bare shoulder, feeling the slight tremor in her frame. Without a word of hesitation, he slid his hand down to gently take her cold hands from across the table, interlacing his fingers with hers. The physical contact sent a jolt of unexpected safety through her battered system. She looked down at their joined hands, a fresh tear escaping her eye and tracing a slow path down her cheek.
"I can leave if you want," Eleanor whispered softly, her voice laced with profound embarrassment and a profound sense of defeat. She pulled slightly against his grip, ready to gather her dignity and flee into the cold city night.
Julian tightened his hold, refusing to let go. He leaned in closer, his dark eyes locked intently onto hers, radiating a profound, unexpected warmth. "Why would I want that?" he asked, his voice low, steady, and entirely sincere.

Eleanor looked up tearfully, desperate to make him understand the depth of the deception she had fallen victim to. "They told me this was a real date," she explained, her voice cracking slightly under the weight of the betrayal.
Without missing a beat, Julian moved from his standing position and pulled out the chair directly next to hers. He sat down beside her at the table, keeping her hands firmly and warmly in his. "Then they're the ones who should be embarrassed," he said firmly, a faint, reassuring smile touching his lips. "You're not anybody's punchline. I'd still like to have dinner with you."
