Chapter 10

The top-floor executive office was bathed in the crisp, bright light of a Tuesday afternoon. Spread across Julian’s large mahogany desk were dozens of financial printouts, compliance files, and project schedules. Eleanor sat beside him, her laptop open, cross-referencing digital audit logs with physical expense reports with practiced efficiency.
Julian watched her work for a moment, admiring the sharp focus and unwavering determination in her eyes. "You have a formidable analytical mind, Eleanor," he observed, handing her a fresh cup of black coffee. "Have you ever considered moving into executive strategy?"
"I’ve always been too focused on creative execution to think about corporate politics," Eleanor replied, pausing to take a sip of the coffee. "Though recent events have given me a crash course in how the upper echelons really operate."
"Corporate politics is simply human nature amplified by high stakes," Julian noted, leaning back in his leather chair. "People like Victoria and her associates operate from a place of leverage and control. They expect everyone else to panic, fold, or negotiate out of fear."
"Which is precisely why we aren't going to do any of those things," Eleanor said, pointing a finger at a highlighted discrepancy on her screen. "Look at this line item from the audit request. They are citing an alleged discrepancy in the Q2 marketing budget allocation for the regional campaign—the exact campaign Chloe was managing before she was terminated."
Julian leaned forward, narrowing his eyes at the document. "Go on."
"Chloe didn't just run the campaign; she had sole signature authority on discretionary petty cash and vendor payouts during that quarter," Eleanor explained, her voice gaining momentum as the pieces clicked into place. "When she was fired, her digital access was revoked, but her final expense reconciliations were never fully signed off by finance because of the sudden HR investigation."
"Which means," Julian finished, a slow, brilliant smile spreading across his face, "Victoria's associates are attempting to flag unverified routine expenses as deliberate financial mismanagement, hoping to pin an administrative irregularity on our division."

"Except they didn't count on the fact that I kept a meticulous personal audit log of every vendor sign-off during my time working under Chloe's team," Eleanor said triumphantly, pulling up a password-encrypted spreadsheet from her personal cloud storage. "Every single dollar is accounted for, receipted, and cross-referenced with bank records. If they want an audit, we are going to hand them an audit so thorough and transparent that it will completely expose their fishing expedition."
Julian looked at her with a mixture of profound admiration and deep affection. He reached across the desk, placing his hand gently over hers. "You are brilliant, Eleanor. Victoria has no idea what she just walked into."
