Chapter 5

The executive conference room on the top floor of the corporate tower was sleek, modern, and completely soundproof. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, the panoramic view of the city skyline looked like a living painting, but inside the room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Chloe sat rigidly in a leather chair across the polished mahogany conference table, her fingers nervously twisting the strap of her handbag. To her left sat the head of Human Resources, a stern middle-aged woman named Margaret, whose expression suggested she had little patience for petty workplace drama.

Julian stood near the window, his arms crossed over his chest, looking down at the paperwork spread out before him. Eleanor sat quietly beside him, observing the proceedings with a detached, calm curiosity. Julian had insisted she attend the meeting as the primary aggrieved party, ensuring her voice would be heard without filtration or corporate whitewashing.

"Let’s review the facts on the table," Margaret began, her voice crisp and authoritative as she adjusted her glasses. "Mr. Vance filed a formal complaint regarding a targeted harassment campaign orchestrated within the marketing department, specifically involving Ms. Davenport and several collaborating employees. Is that correct, Mr. Vance?"

"That is entirely correct," Julian replied, stepping forward and placing both hands flat on the table. "What occurred on Friday evening at L’Étoile was not a harmless prank or a spontaneous misunderstanding. It was a premeditated, malicious attempt to inflict emotional distress on an employee of this firm, utilizing deception, coercion, and corporate internal communications to execute the setup."

Chloe’s face drained of color. She looked desperately toward Margaret, her voice trembling as she tried to defend herself. "It was just a joke! We didn't mean any real harm. Everyone plays harmless pranks in the office from time to time. Eleanor took it way too seriously."

"A joke involves mutual amusement, Ms. Davenport," Julian countered, his tone dropping an octave, carrying a chilling authority that brooked no argument. "Humiliating a colleague by tricking her into believing she was going on a legitimate romantic date, only to walk into a setup designed for public mockery, is not a joke. It is workplace bullying of the highest order, and it violates every core value this company purports to uphold."

Margaret nodded slowly, turning her severe gaze toward Chloe. "The company takes compliance and professional conduct with absolute seriousness. Deliberate harassment and coordinated sabotage of a fellow employee are grounds for immediate termination for cause. Furthermore, legal counsel is currently reviewing whether this incident constitutes intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Chloe burst into tears, the sudden collapse of her bravado occurring in real-time. "Please! You can't fire me! I've worked here for three years! Eleanor, please, tell them you don't want to ruin my career!"

Eleanor looked at Chloe, feeling no satisfaction, only a profound sense of pity for someone whose life was apparently built on tearing others down. She turned to Margaret and Julian, her voice steady and clear. "I don't want to ruin anyone's life. But accountability is not ruin; it is a consequence of one's own choices."
